Wonderful.

My husband said to tell you how much he likes the fly fishing picture on your website.

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Greetings World

I located these images on an external harddrive from ages ago:

Heads staked out. Oil on Masonite. Hung in a lawyer's office since 1985....
Patterned on something I saw in a magazine somewhere...

Oil on masonite from early 1980s before I twigged that a palantir had a slit eye to peer into world where wormtongues dwell...
No idea what happened to this one...

Cheers, and sharing these two just for the record,
Pieter Zaadstra

Very impressive work. Of course, love Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hello everyone,
Thanks for your communal interest in mischief.
I checked another old harddrive. Found some more.
Then the drive rattled and smoked and boy does it stink!
Whatever was on that drive is now emphatically fried.
Sheesh!
Anyway.....

Sorry about the quality. Oh well....
Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hi Attalus and team,

My bad. I forgot to label the images. That splattering smoking hard drive rattled my equilibrium...

From memory it is Boromir with the great horn as I imagined him. A bit Striderish too.

Treebeard being overwhelmed by the fast talking hobbits. Even in the out of focus image you just feel his predicament, eh?

Fighting hobbits are a boisterous lot

Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hi LOTR World,
Found a few more from 1984-85. Analogue quality atrocious as usual. Never mind. Crazy Daze Memories

Tom Bombadil - Master of his river valley (oils on Panel):

Reading Hobbit - oil on canvas:

Photograph of artist at the work station:

Well, there you go. I was young once. Don't look quite like that now....

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Pieter I love seeing these "new" older works.
They are charming and so full of life.

I really like your self portrait, "Self portrait with the 'Dwarves of Moria' and the mountains beneath which their halls were etc...."
I also really liked Lady Eowyn.
They are wonderful.

Your Dwarves have a wonderful quality, so proud and sure of themselves.

The Hobbits mischievous and the men, well, men always try for greatness and hardly ever achieve it.
So you captured them perfectly!
Well done on all of these.

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

I really like your take on Smaug in particular. Most artists focus on portraying him as a big scary monster, but you're the only one who captured the almost pathetic quality Tolkien gave him. After all, the first time we encounter Smaug he's not laying waste to the countryside or devouring peasants, but having a nightmare where he is bested by a much smaller warrior, showing that for all his power he's a deeply insecure, unhappy bugger. The bloated belly you gave him contrasted with his tiny T-Rex arms reflects both his greed and gluttony as well as that impotent, childish side.

Nice work, Pieter. I love the reading Hobbit. Bilbo's "Tales From the Elvish," no doubt?

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hi Team,

Elvish Tales for sure, Attalus.
Greetings to Canada, Michelle.
Hi Scotland Dweller, Crabbit-Minger. BTW in the deep south of OZ to say bugger is an endearment of an obtuse sort. Nobody minds and we all call each other that or more. In America the term is derogatory and means something else, which gets us into trouble. My wife is the Tasmanian campus manager supervising trainers of language and customs with hundreds of migrants to educate good proper English as ‘she is spoke’. Needless to say we confuse ‘em all with our slang-n-strine.
Hi Talisman. Here are three more I found. I cannot locate others but if they pop up I’ll add them here. My files are a shambles of the shambolic… a shameless hobbit hole!!!!

Meeting the Riders of Rohan:
Oils on Panel 30 x 40 inches. No idea where it is now, although I recall painting it in 1985.

Fighting Dwarves with Hobbit: No idea where this one is either...

A dinky di conie about to be dinner: Oil on Dalton 3 Phase (early Yupo)

So, there you go. Any other images from the 1980s will be added if they decide to grace us with their presence, yet they are conspicuously absent right now. Oh well.

Cheers from the deep freeze in Tassie, PZ
