Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hello lovers of LOTR old-time art BM (before movies),

Here another scan from an analogue photo. Sorry about the poor quality.
It's from circa 1983, on Dalton 3 phase synthetic sheet 200 gsm

Man of Bree. Just playing with ideas with this one.
I had some fun with the boozy scene at the inn. Stay tuned. Scan time soon.

BTW I like my old-time ideas better than the gloss new stuff.
At least we were smokin' it in the 1970s!!!
It was real storytelling back then.
Smell mushrooms?

Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hello all LOTR old-timers,
Booze was big in them distant days of lore.
Man! We drank a bit and smoked a bit as well. 'twas all research...applied scientifically.
That was in the late 1970s and this one is a canvas job from that time.
Here's a toast to Bree-folk. I knew them well!

The movies that came so much later ruined the images in my head!

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Greetz LOTR old timers,

Getting drunk with Hobbits was the 'red hot' rage in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Hobbits were the best boozers!
Those were the days!!!

Dwarves oil study on canvas - circa 1983
- one of the first times I used this signature.

When the movies by Jackson came along his dwarves looked differently.
His movie elves were weird too.

Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Greetings LOTR fans,

In those halcyon days before the movies we could visualise without undue
influences from external pictures made by sundry heathens.
Make things up! Now, that's a novel concept.....
Here's the Lady Eowyn, circa 1983.
The Rohirrim are riding and our lady feels totally out of it.

A smallish oil affair on canvas using glazing over a deliberately pale ground
with designs hard to wispy.
Just playing with ideas.

Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Good afternoon from the antipodean wild,

Tom Bombadil...!
We loved him and his infatuation with the riverwoman's daughter.
The image below is a detail section of a larger artwork on canvas.
The original was about 5 x 7 feet.
The Governor of South Australia unveiled it as a feature in a public space.
Circa 1983

Cheers,
Pieter Zaadstra

These are lovely.
I like the mood you impart to them some darkly mysterious and a few bright and light. They are all wonderful, thanks for sharing!

Pieter, it looks great! I think that the analogic quality, adds a natural dimension, to yours unrealistic picture.
Continue to share with us!

Thank you

Ah Pieter. You actually did a respectful, engaging, and informative portrayal of Radagast.

Shame that couldn't be said of some movie makers...

Thanks for posting that. Tolkien's back stories enhance his overall work, but are so often forgotten (or mistreated). Very likeable piece.

I like this. Really conveys Eowyn's sadness and despair. She is my fav female character in the LotR

Those are amazingly beautiful! Would you please mention what medium you used? Not sure if it was said, I didn't read every reply. Stunning work.

Re: LOTR artworks - 1980s

Hello LOTR fans,

Thanks to each 'world-wide' enthusiast who drop in and leave comments. Much appreciated

I rummaged around and located a couple more from those halcyon 'smoky-n-booze' days in the early 1980s.

Oil on canvas. Dwarve warriors.

Uruk-hai final moments before Fanghorn forest when the Rohirrin rode in pursued... Oil on Canvas.

Just sharing,

Cheers from Tasmania, Australia.
