Pls move to structured critique. Campbell Valley.

MY IMAGE(S):

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Pls move to structured critique. Campbell Valley.
Year Created:
Medium: Pastel
Surface: Paper
Dimension: 9
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
No holds barred critique please. Is it cartoon-like? Too many branches? Needs softer/harder branches? Whatever is "off" please state. Clouds are showing much royal blue in the photo at the base than on the painting itself.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
The tree is bothering me. I'm thinking it's too outlined looking. Something is not right.

What I notice the most is the horizontal bands of color, sky, clouds, tree line, field, edge of the road..
Maybe some of those could be blended or broken up a bit.. road edge softer and more over grown? blend the sky/clouds a bit? A little peek thru the far tree line or an opening?
I think the tree looks nice..
Maybe the road could be darker so less noticeable, then the bright field will really stand out. Right now the road tends to grab my eye , when I want to see the field & far trees..

If there was a specific light direction, you could add some nice shadowing effects.

Re: Pls move to structured critique. Campbell Valley.

As already mentioned, the horizontal bands aren't a good idea, plus the perspective of the road and fence are off (and shouldn't the road sign be closer to the road?). Also, is the sky supposed to be stormy--that's what it looks like. I would push the line of background trees further into the distance and define them more, plus make their outline more irregular. The tree looks pretty good, except that you need some more value work and a definite light direction on the branches.

Thank-you both for your valuable comments. I'm going to adjust the "banding" and I never noticed the value on the road and how it is affecting your eye. I really appreciate that you both took the time to critique so well!
