Acanthus and floral construction

Am relatively new to art; I was a woodworker until I was laid low by Rheum Arthritis-can't be on my feet long.

Can someone help me out w some kind of ground rules of construction of borders, or space-filling/background work of acanthus/floral pattern?

I have drawn some and they look bad, disproportionate, etc.....I'm thinking that there must be some grand geometric concepts underlying aesthetically pleasing constructions...you know-you have a space to eventually be painted, but first need to draw this pattern, and that is done bearing in mind the "Golden Ratio", 'Pi', etc, something like that.

What are the processes that one goes through in constructing a custom border or 'carpet page' w acanthus or floral pattern.

All replies are welcome-and Thank you! David
