A cheerful start to February…painting flowers in vases, and/or flowers on their own.
For this project, please use pen/ink and watercolour washes. There are many possible variations for using this combination:
1. loose outline in ink, with washes painted over the pen lines
2. free flowing colour washes and then ink outlines over the top of the washes.
3. detailed pen drawing with touches of colour here and there.
4. watercolour painting with some pen accents. Its a good excuse to explore the various techniques.
You can use roller ball waterproof pens, dip pens, and marker pens, etc.
You can use transparent watercolours or perhaps try gouache.Art by others using these techniques:
Durer- iris
Raoul Dufy- (not sure if he used pen lines or if only used gouache here)
Mondrian -pen and watercolour
Robert Hannaford- wisteria
If you come across other flower artwork by famous artists using pen and wash, please post them in this thread for us to view.
I will upload a few photos for reference next.:D

1.paint a vase of flowers in pen and watercolour wash.
Use one of the photos above or any other you may have, or paint a vase of flowers from life.2. copy a master painting of flowers in this technique, e.g. Durer’s iris.
Post your work on this thread for us to enjoy.
Post any interesting links on the topic here too.
Happy painting!!:D

Traditionally, pen line and watercolours. But with all the new materials…we can play with the concept/ technique. So I think that using watersoluble crayons is not cheating, but rather …experimenting!! Very nice..

I’ll see if I can get around to also contribute something, though if truth be told, flowers in a vase has never been a subject that attracted me much. Somehow cut flowers slowly dying in a vase, their biological purpose unfulfilled, have always struck me as a bit depressing.
