The Shutterbug Pub Daily, Sat/Sun, June 15-16, 2019

Happy weekend to one and all.

Inspired by a fine bee photo Dudley recently posted, I went out front and waited.

This isn't as dramatic as Dudley's, so it lacks the WOW factor his image has.

Dave, it has Wow factor. That is what I said when I first saw it. Wow! That is beautiful. I love that sharp and deeply colored bee against the softly colored plant. Wonderful!

Nothing grand, but the mulberries are blooming and bearing and this is the best I could do with the wind we are having. LOL!

Haveen't been inspired to spend much time on photography of late. I do like the bee shot, Dave. Nice pastels but a bit too busy for the bee. Gettiing in closer to the bee may add more wow factor.

Dave, I like the bee as is in the beautiful floral setting you found it - or perhaps I should say, in which it found you.

Ginny, as a kid I loved mulberries but nowadays for me they are too acidic and give me a bellyache. But your picture brings back the taste that I once enjoyed.

Peter
, the one with dewdrops is the standout for me. Your Oly Tough does a fine job.

I know I'm a fun guy, but for heaven's sake I'll spare you the puns!
Walking my usual route by One Mile Creek I spotted some fungi on the side of a gum.
To photograph it well I needed the pod, so I went home to fetch it and returned to the scene.
I love the soft subtle colours of River Gums and the way nature paints them. How could I live anywhere but Australia!

Re: The Shutterbug Pub Daily, Sat/Sun, June 15-16, 2019

Thanks Ginny. Nice shot of the berries - the colors are lovely. Your shot reminded me of how much I loved elderberry jelly back when I was a youth in Michigan & Ohio. Sadly, I haven't been able to find it since moving to California: either they no longer make it or it's not sold in my area.

MFI, thank you also. Nice images; I especially like the first. Regarding my bee shot, I realize there are several other crops to be had. But I don't see that including so much of the background makes things too busy; I think the softness (in both focus and colors) of the background lets the darker and sharper bee stand out pretty well. I agree that a tighter crop of the bee would be good; I'll try that next.

Mark, thanks. Nice series of shots of the gum tree. I agree - it has beautiful bark.

One more, taken about the same time as the bee, just after watering the flowers in the front yard...

I'm looking forward to today's World Cup games, which will end round 2 of the 3 group play rounds. USA and Sweden should both win their games handily, setting an interesting final group F game where they'll go at each other; this will determine who gets the top spot in their group.

Actually, there will be several good matchups in Round 3: Italy vs Brazil and Australia vs Jamaica in group C (all but Jamaica could end up #1 in this group; it'll probably come down to goal differential), England vs Japan for the same in group D, and Canada vs Netherlands for #1 and #2 in group E. (In general, the teams who finish #1 in their groups have an easier first match in the knockout (lose and your out) rounds.) In the other groups, things look pretty settled: France should win it's next game to be #1 in group A; Germany the same in Group B.

Re: The Shutterbug Pub Daily, Sat/Sun, June 15-16, 2019

Hi all. I like everything that has been posted, from the bee to the berries to the flower to the lichen!

This morning I tried out one of my F mount lenses on the Z6 using the FTZ adapter. Seems to work pretty well. I used the 28-300 so I could close focus. Here are a couple of images.

I hope to (eventually) get a 14-30mm lens to go with the 24-70mm lens for the Z6, both native "Z" mount lenses. I'll use the Z6 for landscape and wide angle, and the D500 for action and telephoto. I would also like to get a Nikon 105mm macro lens to replace my old Tamron 90mm, which will not work with the Z6.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there!

Dave, colourful and bedraggled from the shower, but nice.

Dave, I thought your croop was fine and had plenty wow. I was only trying to say that if the bee itself needs more wow, that the background should be less than the bee.

Thanks for clarifying your thought.

I did take your advice and prepared a closer crop:

Yes, it gives a better look at the bee, so I thank you for suggesting it. But I think I prefer the first version because: 1) the inclusion of more of the soft pastel green is pleasing to my eye, and 2) the "enlarged" bee needed another round of sharpening and the result seems slightly oversharpened.

In other words, your original crop had all the wow there was.

I think both bee shots are very nice. I don't think the bee is oversharpened. It looks okay to me. But, yes, I like the original one better. I just love that soft plant. :-)
