Watercolor Depth and Realism, Level 1 - Basics, Composition, Values, and Understanding Color.

Pigments- Indigo

- Cerulean Blue
- Cyan
- Cobalt Turquoise
- Permanent Green, #1 (replaces Cinnabar Green Light in your textbook)
- Olive Green
- Burnt Umber
- Burnt Sienna
- Permanent Red
- Alizarin Crimson
- Magenta
- Gamboge
- Lemon Yellow
Surface- 140-lb (300gsm) cold-pressed watercolor paper (will need stretched)
Brushes- No. 12 or no. 14 synthetic round
- 1- or 2-inch (25mm or 51mm) flat or a large hake
- No. 2 flat synthetic with stiff bristles (for scrubbing)
Other- Gator board
- Stapler
- HB or No. 2 pencil
- White plastic eraser
- Plastic or porcelain palette
- 2 containers of water
- Paper towels
- Hair dryer
COURSE SYLLABUS
Week 1- Read or review up to page 52
- Read pages 52-61
- Submit examples similar to those on page 52 to show an understanding of how to dull a color with a bit of its compliment (this technique can be used to mix more lively shadow colors)
- Submit a painting of any white flower. Add color but maintain the feeling of a white flower, similar to the demo in the book. Submit reference along with painting
Week 2- Read chapter 3
- Look for examples of real world perspective. Take photos of 1, 2, and 3 point perspective in your neighborhood and submit them
- Do a painting conveying depth through scale. Submit both painting and reference
Week 3- Read chapter 4
- Submit a painting showing hard edges vs. soft edges. Hard edged detail in the focal area (no visible outlining), soft edged background
- Please also submit a photo of your reference material. You can paint clouds or any subject matter that appeals to you
Week 4- Read chapter 5
- Re-do an old painting you have done. Increase depth by adding both separating and unifying washes. Submit in a before and after format; send a photo of existing painting and a photo of the piece after you add both types of washes
