Changing a formula

My portraits of dogs sell well. Last year I sold over 150 of them.

I love painting beach scenes - I live 3 blocks from the sea.

I want to do a painting a day of beach scenes - oil painting sketches on 8" x 10" linen board that has clear gesso so I can let the lovely linen colour come through.

I'm afraid I'm going to be left with 100 paintings as they aren't dog portraits!

I market through instagram and facebook (that's how I got the 150 dogs...)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make this change of direction work and sell?

Thank you

Dogs at the beach is a pretty good idea. After a time, your customer base will associate he two -- dogs and beaches. Then, little by little, do other beach scenes with people and w/o dogs. Mix it up until you're known for either or both.

Congrats on your success in selling so many dog portraits! What about marketing your other art in the same way?

Hi Eliza! I'm in the same boat! I'd like to paint more than dog portraits, but need the money they bring. 2020 is going to be a transition year for me, too.

If I were you, I'd paint your beach scenes and try to sell them locally to tourists. Either through gift shops, galleries, or even if a beachy area near you has touristy events and/or art shows.

Re: Changing a formula

Each year I pick a new study theme. I talk it up in advance, and talk about how it will increase my skill set. This goes on for a couple of months. I talk about the planning, the ways I will do the paintings, the materials, props, and so forth. I get excited and project that out to my client base. I charge a lower price for the studies and do the on edge painted canvas with no framing required. This automatically builds a following for the series before I start it. I am known as a landscape, tree and agricultural land painter. I have build side subject followings for birds, and other subjects by doing the study series.

Re: Changing a formula

Great idea, Linda, I have some wildlife paintings, bird paintings and bees with flowers and kinda didn't know what to do with them. They aren't as good as my other work.

Promoting them to my mailing list and blog AS a new, learning subject is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for your generosity sharing this.

You truly are one of my favorite people on earth and I don't even know you in real life. It's rare to find someone willing to help and share, always.

Robin,
I consider you as a wonderful friend. We no longer have to meet face to face to have friendships. You are a fine painter, indeed.

Re: Changing a formula

If you introduce a few seascapes here and there to your followers. do you think you would risk damaging sales of your dogs?

Ha!

As soon as i read bongolian's suggestion i laughted out loud at the simplicity and brilliance.

Really it gives you tons of room to explore the best of both worlds
