If I wanted to try scratchboard, what basic tools would I require? I would appreciate your thoughts.

However, I personally like to use X-Acto blades (#11 is my favorite, and it’s very easy to find that blade in stores and online). You can also buy a Scratchboard tool kit at Dick Blick that has a series of tools. Honestly, the only one I use very often from that kit is the fiberglass brush. But, everyone likes something different, so it might be a great place to start. I know that many scratchboard artists love tattoo needles and also scalpels – I’ve yet to try either one, so I’m not very helpful in that regard. I hope you give scratchboard a try! It’s pretty addicting!

August 22, 2019 at 12:17 pm #854283Thanks very much, Jenna. It looks as though I should buy a basic kit to try it out and move on to more sophisticated tools if I like making pictures in this way.
I will let you know how I get on. 😁

It looks like you’ve found a great scratchboard resource in the link. I’m glad to see that as I know Blick’s shipping overseas can be quite high. The tool kit (set of 6) is the one I purchased as well. Good luck, and do keep us posted! I hope you fall in love with scratchboard!
