Here's a very different alternative that works brilliantly for many styles of painting: Ceracolors, a water-soluble cold wax paint. If you want to seal a layer permanently for glazing over or to finish off the whole work you hit it with a hair dryer. Otherwise it's a paint medium that you use just like you would acrylics, oils or watercolros. And it can give you effects that look like all of those, plus even pastel appearance. It's compleley soluble in water for clean up AND for opening the paint, so it's easier than acrylics (I do that too, so I know). Look it up.
