Scratchboard Sampling

And since there seem to be quite a few scratchboarders here I thought I would post a sampling of my scratchboard work too. I do mostly animals. I have only done seven scratchboards so far and am working on student grade board (too poor for the good stuff).

My 2nd scratchboard completed in 1997, as a high school senior

Fourth Scratchboard completed in 2000

Fifth Scratchboard completed in 2001

Sixth scratchboard completed in 2001; won Judges choice at county fair. Colored areas are done with marker.

My newest scratchboard is posted in the animals/wildlife forum, but you may have to go back a page. It is of a bull terrier.

Thanks for looking...all comments welcome and appreciated!

Normally, you would expect to say to someone that they are improving as they go on, but I just LOVE your 2nd piece of the Koala's.
Are you self taught at this, just pick it up, or were you taught this?

Joe

Hi Joe,

My first two scratchboards I did in a highschool art class, where I had a fantastic teacher. However, we probably only had two weeks or instruction and working time to finishe the projects. Other than that brief introduction in highschool I am self taught. And while I do love the koalas, I guess I do feel I have made progress, as I now have a better grasp on hair textures, and following the flow and contours of animals. Unfortunately my scanner is very bad, so none of these look as good as they could. Also I need to get a better scratching tool now to make more progress.

Hi, Crias!

I am ONLY a photographer, as I can't draw a circle, but I love to see various art forms.

I love the owls (I'm a major bird and parrot lover), but those bears just do me in! How precious they look (yeah, I do sound like a woman, don't I?).

I'd love to see more!

Those owls are very haunting. The feathers and eyes are wonderful. I also think the Koala's are excellent. The sheperd and the bears are good, but don't quite meet up to the other two. I believe your work would go over big at wildlife shows especially since you just don't see a lot of scratchboard out there these days.

Photographer: Thank you very much for your comments. And even if you don't do artwork, it is as important (if not more so) how the general public sees an image as it is how a real art critic does, at least to me!

Arlene: Thanks too. I am not headed to become a wildlife artist, but I do enjoy doing it in my spare time. Most of my work is of domestic animals, however I find more good scratchboard subjects in the wildlife relam.

Sassybird: I have never done any art shows, but have thought about it. I guess I am a bit intimidated by all the work that would have to go into a nice display. Also I would need to do MANY more works in scratchbaord before I felt confident that I could offer the public something that they would be interested in.

Thanks all for your fantastic comments!
