I like it. Maybe you can do a study of about 10 portraits or until you are happy with your outlines?

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2017

Thanks Christel

I have a reference for this. A 1940's black and white taken at a distance of 30+ feet. It is hardly more than a pixel pattern. I have been measuring and trying to recreate the features as a "study.' I have the features out of alignment and the ellipse of the eye and ear is still wrong but I am starting to see an image emerge from the faint pattern in the photo.

I am learning about the perspective of features and how the features align. Interesting because I like portraits. Mostly I do quick, quirky faces to catch the essence but this is more of a "study" than a sketch.

Ratchet - well, I'm loving this one! I understand the compulsion to continue on. From my perspective, though, you're much closer than you think to taking this to a more detailed portrait. You could do a lot with this one right, methinks!

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2017

Oh, and I forgot to post my own sketch for the day. This is from the Scavenger hunt list - thank goodness for it, because I've been busy the last few days and these are more rapid-fire in nature, which suits me fine!

This is a hanging planter. I bought it because I loved the sun. The pots are too small to put any flowers in them, so I've just kept tea candles in them, and they put off a nice glow on the wall.

This was fun because it was a good exercise in scraping back - the planter is all mottled and discolored, and the sun-face is not deeply carved out. All the scrapings left a bit of a mess.

I somehow drew it upside-down - the spiral should be on the left side. It bugged me the whole time my wrist was reaching across it. How do I do these things??

Good job of texturing. I like the highlighted rims and the ellipses are elliptical for freehand.

I am doing one of my dogs right now... this was from the other day when I started it. Did a little more today.
