Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

Artistinmemphis deserves all the credit
My version is a cheap way out and I needed something small.

There are countless ways to make Artistinmemphis art rack, horizontal, vertical, wide, narrow, from floor to ceiling, small, large...with the right support whether it be metal or wood.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

I know this was posted a couple of years ago, but just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing! I just started oil painting and have a very old home that piles dust on everything! I'll make this design and add muslin panels with velcro all around to let air through but not dust! Thanks again =)

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

Thank you so very much for posting this!! My husband and I put one together last night and it's made a huge difference in my space. We didn't do all the shelves like you did, but can always add the pegboard and dowels to the other shelves later if we feel the need. Here's the one we put together:

Again, thank you very much for sharing your wonderful idea.

Looks Great SuburbanMama. I like the white. Very organized looking.

Here's mine in my studio a few days ago.

It looks great and it fits perfectly into that little niche. It really looks very nice and neat. Your idea really is brilliant. It looks professional and can be tailored to each person's needs. I'm so thankful that you shared your idea with everyone. It is a perfect design. I love the windows and fireplace in your studio too. It looks like a relaxing atmosphere perfect for creating.

We had the white shelf already, so we used it. It is full now with the top being blank canvases and the bottom full of drying ones. My space is currently half of our guest bedroom, so the rack really helps make great use of my cramped space. It's perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your idea.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

I have a large closet in my art space that has everything shoved into it or did till i went looking for something and now have a large pile in the floor.....

I have many paper pieces I need stored and will be going tomorrow to get some peg board and build horizontal shelves into my closet. Being paper though I have to have a shelf at each level so I am thinking cheap plywood boards for that. Concerned about weight though so should I get acid free foam board for shelves or use plywood....

I work mostly in pencil but am going through a oil pastel faze and have some old charcoal pieces I need to get off the floor...oh and I just ordered a new fancy cont crayon set! Will also store water color paintings. I will do the vertical shelves on the bottom though for larger canvas pieces.

Thank you for sharing this as I had budgeted some money to purchase the fancy store bought version and now I have more money to spend on supplies or frames instead.

After seeing the cart with the paint cabinet I feel a desire to put pegboard all over the room I now have soooooo many ideas!

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

For paper projects, I found a project for taking a metal cube storage system and making a drying/storage rack instead of the cube system. You make the first cube as directed. Instead of making the other cubes, you use zip ties to use the other pieces as shelves inside of the cube. You can make more cubes with shelves and attach to the first cube if you want. I only needed one cube with shelves. It's worked pretty well for me and my kids so far. It might save you some money. The kit I got was only $12.

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

I will keep that for my next project. I already got the supplies when I saw your response but I expect it may be small for my larger charcoal and oil pastel pieces. Would probably fit great on my watercolor and ink projects.

I have a old computer desk I use in my art room because it has a large flat area and a shelf over for monitor which is where I stand my still life items or picture references. On the sides are ares for shelves but they expected you to put your pc or printer in so not many shelves. There are peg holes to move the one shelf though so you gave me an idea. I may just cut some pegs and any scrap wood I can make smaller shelves!

I love this forum.

I might price the cost of purchasing...are they called runners or something? The brackets for drawers? Anyways and see if I can build sliding shelves as the desk is quite deep but that's future month or six away idea lol.

I think what you mean is drawer glides. You can also find custom made drawers that come shipped with the glides.

Re: Art storage rack

My hubby just custom built me an art storage/drying rack for my studio. Can you tell I'm excited?

Here are a couple pics.

Easily rolls right into the alcove of my art studio. It measures 37 1/2" L x 25 1/2" W x 37 3/4" H w/wheels. The flat drying shelves on top are detachable and bring the height up to 50 1/4" on that end. He used peg board, 3/4" x 1 3/4" pine, doweling and screws.

Stay inspired!
Michelle

Re: Art storage rack for painters- easy to build

Excellent idea, Michelle and what a clever and handy hubby! I like having room to store stretched canvas stash as well as painted canvases. I may well put my hubby to designing a similar one with room for my stash of "rescued" picture frames just waiting for a painting. They can be a headache to store other than standing up against a wall. Good and practical idea! your hubby deserves a hug for his idea.
