I really should have sketched this out in detail before I started but I’m not working from any particular reference photos, just winging it and now I kind of regret that, but I also learn this way. Please feel free to offer constructive criticism. (More details on my blog.)

    1. Blocked in using acrylic on 16″x20″ canvas. The rock was textured with mastic first.

    2. First layer in oils…will have to wait for it to dry now. I ALWAYS go too heavy with the oils.

Another oil layer on the lions…more to come but this really does need to dry more.

Hi Yvonne… It looks very good… the progression is very neat :) I like the tones…. Maybe you need to add a bit of shadows to give a consistent depth perspective… yet is a very good attempt :)

Thanks for this. I will either try to fix it or start over.

Looking good so far Yvonne, thanks for sharing your progress. I like the textures in the paint and the story the picture is telling. Will check back for updates. :)

The colours are lovely. They really glow. It is nice to see your progress through this painting. Good effort.

Thanks Kay and Chammi – encouragement always appreciated. While the paint’s been drying I thought I would do some lion studies with some new watercolour pencils and figure out how I’m going to repair or redo this @#$% awful painting. It’s always a learning process for me. Skipping the sketch is often (but not always) a bad idea for me……or maybe I just like doing things backwards!

Good for you. Continued practice helps so much toward self-confidence. Lions are not easy and you are doing well.

Having found what I’m looking for, I prepare the redo… Maybe you can see I’m going for a bigger head as well. Anyway this has to dry…

Trying this again…focusing on getting the look of the big lion right first…lots to do. Will keep plucking away at it when time permits.

The mane is too much like an afro and the cub needs a lot of work but progressing slowly…
