Here is my third start on this picture. The first one, I spent 6 whole hours meticulously gridding the image onto my chosen paper, only to find I did not like the paper at all for CPs, then my vape leaked on it and made oily looking patches all over the page. Ditch attempt number 1.
Then I thought I’d try doing it with soft pastels. So more gridding, only to find that using graphite to grid onto sanded paper is a terribly messy process, and the graphite is almost impossible to rub out, and the grid shows through the lighter colours. Ditch attempt number 2 *sigh*.
This is attempt number 3, transferred by rubbing charcoal on the back of the reference, spraying it with workable fixative, then tracing onto paper. I was worried about the lines being too dark, so went really light on it, and the transferred image is much lighter than I’d like, and some of the detail is lost. I am determined to push on with it though. Third time lucky? We’ll see. I’ve started just blocking in colour before I lose the image altogether. This is about 4 hours in, including transferring the image.
Anyway, A4 sketch pad paper with Prismacolour Premiers. Reference by Lynnie on PMP.

February 9, 2019 at 8:23 am #777862It’s looking good. The eye is beautiful.

February 12, 2019 at 2:22 am #777864Argh! You’ll never guess what. I’ve started again. While I was concentrating on the eye, I rubbed a lot of feather detail out and couldn’t find my way back to it again. I actually am on my 2nd try since this start. I couldn’t work out why my image was transferring so softly, then realised that in an effort to not have the image transfer too dark, I was spraying too much fixative on the charcoal, so of course, hardly any was transferring to my paper as I traced. With the lastest one, I’ve probably gone a bit far the other way, but I’m still working with it. I’ll post a pic when I feel I’ve got something worth showing. *SIGH* This has got to be the most challenging thing I’ve ever tried to do. This kookaburra is gonna be the death of me.

February 12, 2019 at 7:46 am #777863The second one will be wonderful considering the start of the first one. I too hate starting over but sometimes it just has to be done. I’m looking forward to your next post.
VenaFebruary 13, 2019 at 2:17 am #777865Well, I don’t know how happy I am with this, but I am going to keep going with it. I think all up, this is attempt number 5 with this kookaburra, or it even could be number 6 … I’ve lost count. I know it’s early days yet, and there’s a LOT LOT LOT of work still to do. I might regret deciding to do the whole background blue. I’m just working on that whenever I start feeling overwhelmed with the bird itself. This is on A4 heavy cartridge that I bought the other day.

February 17, 2019 at 1:40 am #777866Thank you, Penny and Karen.
I’ve managed to get a few more hours in on this one. Got some feathers happening, but struggling to get all the little white bits of paper covered. I’m trying to blend with isopropyl alcohol, with some success. Maybe more layers, then the iso again. Also got a couple more layers on the blue background.
