I went to look at the colourchart for these on Mungyo’s website and THEY ARE NOT THERE! They have been taken off the website :mad::crying:
I have sent Mungyo an email asking if they’ve discontinued production of these, and will update here when I get a response.
I would be absolutely GUTTED if they aren’t going to make any more.

Nothing left but smoke and cellar, and a woman with a black umbrella...April 8, 2019 at 7:32 am #812017I don’t believe they want to discontinue these because they are a huge success worldwide… maybe it’s just some kind of re-branding?
This is a 72 color chart for Mungyos if anyone needs it:

April 8, 2019 at 9:27 am #812005I really hope that’s the case, but everything else is still on their website. They are a huge success in terms of budget oil pastels, especially considering how awesome they are for the little they cost, but unfortunately oil pastels in generally are not popular.

Nothing left but smoke and cellar, and a woman with a black umbrella...April 8, 2019 at 11:13 am #812009I recently bought another 72-count wooden box of them, on sale through Jerry’s online.
What I noticed at the time (and this is within the last month) was that the online color chart that was listed for them didn’t match the product numbers or names of the colors that I had from the color chart that came enclosed with the sets I have. The color charts that accompany the sets call them the “MOPV” series, but apparently that is a more recent delineation.
I hope that all that’s happening here is that they realized they had a very outdated color chart online, and took it down.
I’d be gutted, as well, if the whole line was discontinued. In terms of cost/benefit, I firmly believe these OP’s are the best value out there.

April 8, 2019 at 11:30 am #812010Sarah, I can’t find an actual home web page for Mungyo – I’m only seeing a facebook page, and a company called Foremost Agencies that sells Mungyos, but also a lot of other art supplies. Where are you looking?
I found the outdated color chart – still showing up at Jerry’s Artarama.
Here’s the link. They were formally referred to as the “MOP” series, even with a 72-count set. The colors are probably the exact same as they are now, under the MOPV name, but they’ve been re-numbered and renamed. The MOP line are all numbered in the 500’s and, currently, the MOPV line are all numbered in the 200’s. Example: The old “Naples yellow” is now called “Pale yellow.”

April 8, 2019 at 11:35 am #812006This is the professional section of the website, where they used to be: http://www.mungyo.co.kr/eng/05_arts/arts_01.php?gubunx=Oil+Pastel&PHPSESSID=dbb4e0079270ff51ef3362d746e208c3
And this is the “colour and play” section, where the other oil pastels are: http://www.mungyo.co.kr/eng/04_coloring/coloring_01.php?gubunx=Oil+Pastel
Panic mode is well and truly engaged!
ETA: the professional dusty pastel lines are still there…

Yes, it looks odd. The ones that are online have the “MOP” designation under the Professional section. Even the wooden box, 72-count photos in the Color & Play section have that designation. If I were just going by those photos of the product, I wouldn’t know what I was really getting.
Confusing, at best. Let’s hope they answer you very soon (in a positive way!).

April 16, 2019 at 3:19 am #812008Morning!
Good news, MJ Cho at Mungyo says they are still making and supplying the MOPV oil pastels for professionals.
MJ also told me I could place an order over $8,000 I think the intent of my question may have been misunderstood.

@jenniferpaints http://jrcs.com.au/artistMay 6, 2019 at 2:25 pm #812016I love my Mungyo!
But I also love Sennilier ( or however it is spelled) and I love Sakura too.
Why does it seem that oil pastels are so unpopular?May 9, 2019 at 7:45 am #812019Why does it seem that oil pastels are so unpopular?
From reading through this forum, I can say that the relative unpopularity of oil pastels lies in their short history. They only came about 100 years ago (Sakura Cray-Pas, and they were not nearly as good as they are now) as a bright and handy medium for children. So for a very long time people have been associating OPs with kid’s mediums. Then again, OPs have been popular in schools, many people recall that from their childhood, and they believe all OPs are the same quality as the cheap student grade ones. In a word, people don’t take OPs seriously.
The Senneliers came about in 1947 and I don’t know when they became available to general public. There are still lots of people who have no idea there are awesome quality artist grade OPs out there.
Then again, think about dry pastels and colored pencils – both were not considered a serious fine art medium for a long time.
I see that OPs are more popular as a cheap and fun medium for everyone, and especially in India and other Asian countries… and maybe in my country too (Russia).
