Re: A study on Eyes and Noses

Great thread. When I get the eyes wrong the entire face goes to toilet.

Re: A study on Eyes and Noses

I have actually changed how I do eyes on horses since I initially posted to this thread and rarely use stippling for eyes now. I now mostly use the fiberglass brush (with some re-inking) which gives a softer, more subtle feel to the eye in my opinion. Other times I use very fine lines made with the scalpel (again with re-inking).

Fiberglass brush: "Tassels" - 8"x10"

Much magnified close up of the eye created this way:

And this one with fine lines: "Wisdom" 10"x8"

Much magnified close up of the eye created this way:

However if the eye is a very small part of the board (or on a very small board) I might still use stippling, as it is difficult to control the fiberglass brush in small areas and stippling does give a satisfactory result.

Re: A study on Eyes and Noses

Here are some more recent eyes from boards I have done. To me they are different. Some are soft focus to suit the mood, (my grandaughter wearing my Grandma's hat) and some are crisp and light to fit the mood, (Fishface). I even put in closed eyes.

Reply to Diana Lee: Wow. So you just do a lot of cross-hatching when it comes down to it. I'm brand new to the medium, but I've been approaching it similar to doing a pen and ink drawing using many different traditional forms of line. This insight is great. Thanks!

What great closeups-never thought of crosshatching in part of the eyes.
