Copy of “Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness” by Guido Reni

Hi, Here is a small copy I made of “Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness” by Guido Reni (1637). My copy is in oils on MDF hardboard, 12 by 8½ inches or 30,0 by 21,6 cm. The original masterpiece is 225 by 162 cm, or 89 by 64 inches.

You’ve done a good job. When I compare your copy to the original, the main difference I notice is contrast. Reni’s original background is much darker, causing the skin to glow in comparison. But definitely a successful study. And an interesting choice. What drew you to this painting?

Tony11214 and Ju-Ju-Beads thanks for your comments.

Ju-Ju-Beads, you are right about the contrast. The first photo was actually very different from my painting and I'm not pleased with it. I think because of some intelligent feature in my camera settings then this became far too bright and also distorted colors.

Here is a new photo, it is better although a bit too reddish and the sky too dark and saturated, but in general somewhat similar to my painting. I've also been tweaking the painting a little more.

I find Reni's composition fascinating and powerful. When I was painting this I began to think that Reni must have had one model for the face, probably a boy or a young man, but another model ― much more muscular adult for the body. He depicts the spiritual strength of John the Baptist by showing a muscular body I think.
