Re: Reds

What rich and beautiful color in this piece. Another winner! Well done, Derek!

Re: Reds

The very first thought that occurred to me, was also the very first thought by others!

The reds appear brilliant in the painting, but in fact they are rather low-chroma (on something like Munsell). That's the way they should be. For those who doubt what I say, pull out a tube of whatever red paint you use (even something inherently low-chroma such as Venetian Red) and compare to the painting.

I like the modulation with orange, in the large wall at left.

Re: Reds

Hi Robert: good eye.
I also made sure to give some play of complements; those various greens have a visual effect on the reds.
Another factor is photographing paintings; the light in the room, my Sony camera which tends to saturate colors more and my Cannon which seems to downplay saturation and of course, what happens upon uploading to the WC site. So many variables.

Re: Reds

I live in dairy country and see red barns like this frequently. You nailed it!

Re: Reds

The values are spot on! I agree with the rest, excellent handling of the red color.
Everything is perfect in balance.

Re: Reds

Excellent composition. I like how, despite the energizing colour red is the main one, there is a real since of peace and quiet, though in a farm yard there is always a possibility of some life, big or small, popping out from somewhere. Very skillfully painted.

You talked about an isolation coat between an acrylic ground and oils. That makes sense to me as from what I've read. Acrylics make a poor ground for oils due to them being too smooth as they form a closed layer. There is no chemical bond between acrylic and oil, so tooth is needed for a mechanical bond.

Re: Reds

Thank you Phranque and yes, that is correct about the isolation coat.
