Have been having very spring like weather lately. Occasionally having a sunny day that feels down-right warm. Mostly, tho’ having rain. Threats of flooding between the rain and the snow melting. No spring flowers yet. I expect to see them soon.
I’ve done as many critters as I want to for a while. Been experimenting on a combination sewing and needle felting for a doll head. Trying to apply the things I learned last February at the doll workshop. First one is already in the bin. DH teases me that I don’t have a “delete key”. Since he does digital art it’s easy for him to back something out.
Hope y’all are doing well and making stuff.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 3, 2019 at 3:40 am #809505Dull here after a rainy night.
Sadly Ruth has to have cataract surgery, her long sight is shot and I hope it doesn’t impair her short distance sight.

We must leave our mark on this worldApril 3, 2019 at 5:49 pm #809506Doug, sorry to hear about Ruth’s eyesight. Wishing her the best and a speedy recovery. My mom had cataract surgery last year and her eyesight improved greatly including close up after the eyes healed.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 4, 2019 at 1:02 pm #809520Yes. My mother also had cataract surgery. After it she could read books again.
She had to have new glasses afterwards.I have been not doing much. It got really cold this week, like in the-20s c. Last week it was full overcast and humid. This week it is bright sunny and COLD!

April 4, 2019 at 5:50 pm #809507Lena, stay warm. I find I can’t work as much when it’s cold as my hands get cold which makes the chronic tendonitis worse. Fingerless gloves have helped some.
Really must get busy on my things. The second doll head seems to be heading for the bin as well. Each one is a huge learning experience. So in a way that’s good. Have my new laying press and sewing frame for making books, but have’t started yet. Only so much energy to devote to projects and distractions.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 4, 2019 at 6:12 pm #809521Debbie, don’t put them in the bin. Keep them, when you look back it will make you feel good at what you accomplished.
If you ever do a show you can let the public put their dirty hands on them as a way to let them touch your work. It also illustrates the work involved in getting a nice product. It cuts through all the stupid questions like “how long did take you?” . And if you ever decide to make monsters…..
Also right now you can’t see the good or interesting little bits, but when you look back you can see little details that will allow you to make your work uniquely yours.I went out and got some groceries. Later I will do a load of laundry. Tomorrow the weather should be nicer and I will take the young dog to daycare to get some exercise and since I will be out I will go and find some photos to take.

April 5, 2019 at 6:06 pm #809508Lena, I actually do keep the pieces I’m working on until I get what I was looking for. I only have so much room. The “failures” are actually on my workspace. They work for seeing what I did before. Once I have this method figured out or not, then I will decide which, if any, I should keep for future reference or practice. I never understood why people would ask “how long did that take you?” until someone commented about how much I make per hour. They are trying to figure out if you are over paying yourself. Never realizing the hours it took in trial and error and skill building to get a piece you were willing to show to the public. When I figured that out, I started answering hundreds of hours, I can’t keep track. And it’s actually true, even if they take it as a joke.
So, I’m working on a third iteration of this method of making a doll head. Don’t know how much I’ll get done tonight because this is the day I do all those adult things like grocery shopping and laundry.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 6, 2019 at 12:02 pm #809522That is good debbie.
I went out yesterday and my camera stopped working. The tablet takes nice pictures but it is really to big and I had to take my gloves off and it was -15c with a good wind coming off the lake. I now have a new camera. And I figured out how to make it talk the tablet.
I will try again today to get some interesting shots.
My daughter comes home tonight so hopefully I will not have to get up at 5am tomorrow to let the dogs out.Doll Art by Lena
April 6, 2019 at 5:51 pm #809509Lena, have fun with your new camera. Yup, let mom take care of the babies.
So I’ve used the new laying press to cut the grooves for sewing the signatures of a book. Took less than a minute as opposed to punching each signature individually or trying to hold the clamped pages in one hand while using a saw in the other. That will save me a bunch of time and frustration. Next to try out the sewing frame. But I think I’ll go work on the doll head some more first.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 7, 2019 at 5:01 pm #809523Tools are wondrous things. To often us women deny ourselves of them because they cost money. ” I don’t need them because I can do it the hard way” . I remember agonising about buying some turning sticks, because I could do it the hard way. I finally bought them and saved my self time and irritation.
Now if I need a tool I buy it.My daughter got home today, 24 hour late. She got bumped or to be accurate she volunteered to be bumped. It didn’t matter to her and she got $800 credit.

April 7, 2019 at 5:48 pm #809510Lena, I guess your daughter didn’t think about it mattering to you. Tho’ $800 is a nice perk. How much longer is your visit?
So the current doll head has had 4 nose jobs. I ended up putting it down in frustration. Last night I was willing to concede that doll making was not my thing and I should just not go there any more. Today I am thinking of another approach to try so I guess I’m not willing to give up just yet.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 8, 2019 at 12:15 pm #809524Oh she checked with me. She was probably going to be bumped anyway but by volunteering she got more credit. Also it meant I didn’t have to pick her up at 11pm.

April 8, 2019 at 5:20 pm #809511Lena, glad she checked with you. Hope your visit is still going well.
Didn’t do anything of note yesterday. Was still a bit grumpy about all the nose jobs on the doll head. So, I did some computer gaming, some video watching and just let the whole thing sit for a bit.

Guide - Fiber Art ForumApril 11, 2019 at 5:52 pm #809525I am home.
The dog was so glad to see me.
I am taking it easy today, flying (and hauling luggage) causes issues these days.
It is nice to be in my own bed again.
I also spent two days walking all over Yellowknife which probably also added to the issues. I made it up to the pilot memorial, which is on top of a huge rocky outcrop, there are stairs upto the top and the views are amazing. Then of course I had to go down the stairs…..Doll Art by Lena
April 12, 2019 at 4:41 pm #809512Lena, welcome home! Rest and recover.
Not much going on. The doll is in time out while my frustration levels subside. I’ve not gone any farther in the book making. Tho’ I did get an order from my shop. Off to do the packaging and get it shipped.
