Exclamation Book Cover size and copy Technique

HELP

I have a YA book cover project due in November and this time I want to do it right, so, I need help.

What is the right size canvas/paper to paint on for a YA book cover? I originally just painted on rectangular 9x11 hard canvas which were then scanned into a computer and sized from there. This was a very inaccurate, and things get cut out and the sizes seemed a bit off.
I have looked up a few things and found that most of the time it is painted in full wrap style and I think it is done in the books true size. So, if that is the case (and I have no idea if it is) what would the true size be, not including book jacket flaps? (The covers I have messure vary do to the binding width)

I also would still like to know what would be the best way to copy the image? I think scanning it into a computer from a home scanner is still the best idea especially if the original piece is small enough. I could always take it to kinkos to have them scan it and load it on a disk for me? If any peeps have insider tips they would be greatly appreciated!
