Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

This is a quick interpretation of the Male Cardinal by mustang202.

I honestly only spent a few minutes on it, so is not my best work .... sorry! Is pen and pencil.

Thought I post anyway.

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

I really like both interpretations, each has its own mood depending on the emphasis of texture or color. I think the paper was the only detriment on version 1 as I like how the fence, tree and mailbox interact as well as the sun dappled effect on the mailbox. Version 2 is sunny and cheerful thanks to brighter colors, the flowers and blue sky. I wonder if carrying the sun dappled effect from version 1 over to version 2 would really make this a standout painting. Just a touch more detail would really make your focal point sing.

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

Thanks, Rob! The watercolor version definitely has more detail in it. I do like the way the shade worked on it better. With the acrylic on canvas, I intentionally pared it down for a couple of reasons. One, I didn't want to try to fit everything onto that canvas and make it look reasonable. Two, I didn't want to paint the same painting again. I'm just funny that way.

I do agree about putting a bit more detail on the acrylic one. I did shade the door on the mailbox a bit and it does look a bit better. I sort of left it blank, thinking about those paintings you see at craft fairs where you can have your own name painted in the picture. Just an inside joke. Not so funny.

Sandy, Virginia, Val and Eileen thank you for your comments.

alnkt - lovely little watercolours - you have a very good eye - well captured.

Sandy - love your little mailbox with the curling wire. The shadows on the mailbox are wonderful.

Maria - beautiful cardinal - very simple and striking.

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

So I gave a try to the Red Icelandic Poppy 6 by stephie20 in oils. On one of those little canvas they sell. I think is 3 x 3. It looks much better in person than in the picture .... as I usually work with knifes, and has a lot of body.

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

Virginia, another very well done ATC sized lighthouse! I was just over in the "Past" thread and saw your Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, WOW. I googled it and was suprised that I had no clue what it actually looked like. I have looked at the Chicago one from the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel and still didn't see it as well as you painted it! Kurlie 8-)

Maria, I like your flower. Knife painting can be very interesting.

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

Thanks Kurlie! I love painting lighthouses. Funny it was completely accidental and it took me to this year to paint the one I actually grew up with!

Maria, love the poppy, the knives give it such drama!

Re: Monthly MINIATURE Project -- April, 2012

I hope you'll forgive my butting in with an odd project for the minature project.

I've been intending to paint some minatures and I just read about "White-Line Prints" (Province Town Print) and wanted to give it a try. I love the photo of the lighthouse.

The images are of my printing block and of my attempt to pull a print. The linoleum block was quite disappointing and I just couldn't get a good print.

I'll try it again one day with a better block.

Anyway 4 by 6 inch block and print.

I hope to be able to join in next month with more traditional media.

Hal -- Thankyou for trying the Lighthouse with block printing. I haven't tried it myself, but have always imagined it wouldn't be easy. I like your second one -- well done.
