Rembrandt Perm Red Medium (keep chroma better then Cad Red when you add white)

Rembrandt Prussian Blue (deluted with 50% Ivory black to dull out)
W&N Ivory Black
Medium 5 part thinner, 1 part stand oil, 1 part Damar Varish

BRUSHES
bristle Flats, Likee Gainesboro, Langnickle Royal Sables, small rounds in sable.

Classens Type 12 Canvas Portrait Linen Sometime Type 13 very smooth canvas - Tighter weave accents brush strokes
Not stretched. Canvas is Stapled to board , give ability to crop

Palette knives use to soften edges

Tone canvas; Put a warm tone over while thing Black & Oxide brown, and raw sienna (looks like some blue in it)

Not too much paint. Wipe with paper towel

Draw the outline of shape (head) Draw with vine charcoal

Use straight lines over curve to define all your forms Use angles to get shape right (use brush to plum lines)

Lightest light - darkest dark,

His palette is a mess, not orderly or clean

Tone canvas with warm brown green color raw sienna prussian blue
Draw with vine charcoal
Start with lightest lights, color is hot (no white) ie:use yellow red, orange
Then insert darkest darks to get painting keyed with lightest light and darkest dark

warm and cool lights, he talks a lot about temperature

black, raw sienna, red - nice skin color for darks
Black in very useful color, Raw Sienna with Black or red great to use

keep your values keyed throughout the process

lightest light again hot against darkest warm

red and raw sienna for shadow and as approaching light gets hot
hot colors edge darks

cool under nose (purple)
top plane cool purple Light
very cool on bridge of nose

Remind yourself to squint
don't over model

keep values in proper range

Premix colors to use for shadow, highlights etc
Use compliment to grey colors (ie violet is warmed down by adding sienna)

Deepest darks are warmer,

Thanks Theresa,

I know I'm adding on to an old post but I would really like to thank you for taking the time to add those tips.

I have almost bought his video numerous times but keep holding back due to the price. It does seem like it's worth it though ..but until then I at least have a few tips.

I am totally fascinated by Daniel Gerhartz's paintings and his amazing God given talent.

So thanks again

I've purchased a great number of DVD's... mostly off of eBay typically for less than half the original price and sometimes for a small fraction of the original price. Beware, though, that most of what you get on eBay are now pirated copies. If the seller is from Greece or Ukraine, you can almost be assured that what you'll get is a pirated copy... they are in the business of selling pirated copies and the same seller will list couple dozens of DVD's by various artists.

As far as quality, they are digital so copies are as good as the originals. The box cover and labeling lack the crispness of the original, and some of the earlier copies made in foreign countires, specifically Greece, may contain misspellings on the discs themselves, which is a dead giveaway that it's a pirated copy.

That aside, Lilliedahl Publication DVD's seem to be the highest quality videos I've seen on the market in terms of production quality. Color, picture, sound... all are crisp and top notch.

In answer to an earlier post about David Lefel's DVD, his was the first DVD I purchased and it was from Lilliedahl Publications and it was excellent. I think that one was "Peaches and Delft Mug" or something like that... I'm doing this from memory. Lefel, in my opinion, anyway, tends to be maybe a bit too philosophical at times, but maybe that's because I'm a beginner and don't appreciate that aspect of it as much as more advanced oil painters.
