Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

These right here are my PAST Halloween paintings (I think you've seen one or more of them).... Trick or Treat was the oldest, followed by Moon Cat, then Halloween Cat (sitting on the jack-o-lantern), and finally Linus and the Great Pumpkin.

I've decided what I will do for THIS challenge...and it will be posted....when it ESCAPES....on the 24th.

Love the cats Woody.

I never thought any of those things were creepy, though I never really believed in them either. It was fun to pretend while at the same time I would give my mom hints about stocking stuffers. These days I struggle with the line between pretending and lying. When my son asks if something is real I don't know what to say. I blame all those parents who are so adamant about their kids believing.

The movie Santa's Slay put that story in a whole new light.

The other night my son managed to swallow two teeth, so I was like, here I'll pay you for them. lol

Michelle, rember Joseph Campbell's usage of "myth."
Quote:
It has always been the prime function of mythology and rite to supply the symbols that carry the human spirit forward, in counteraction to those that tend to tie it back. In fact, it may very well be that the very high incidence of neuroticism among ourselves follows the decline among us of such effective spiritual aid. We remain fixated to the unexorcised images of our infancy, and hence disinclined to the necessary passages of our adulthood.

Those are great Woody!
The first one, a nice bit of Cheese Cake, very reminiscent of Vargas or Olivia.
I must admit I'm a sucker for the cat ones, love them both.
I admired the Linus and Great Pumpkin one with the old school movie monsters, when you posted it in acrylics. To let everyone here know it is five feet long!!!!

In "primitive" societies there are rites, passages or ceremonies to mark being an adult.
In more "civilized" societies there are none. There are things that indicate you are an adult. However some people never feel they are an adult no matter how old they are.

Part of me has "arrested adolescence" or so I've been told when it comes to creative entertainment. I accept that. My philosophy in life is to have fun and do what feels good and avoid hurting other people. Seems to work for me.

Did you see they think they found the tomb of the real Saint Nick? Oddly enough, even though I was freaked out by the tooth fairy, I don't remember ever thinking Santa was real. I was a weird kid!

Woody, those are all great but I love the cat on the pumpkin. It looks like my cat! She's elderly now and has thinned out but when she was younger, she was a chubby girl.

Michelle, are you getting ready for Thanksgiving? (Canadian Thanksgiving is this coming weekend). I imagine your little guy is looking forward to it.

AARGH, Virginia, don't talk St. Nicholas or even about Thanksgiving, even Canadian thanksgiving. It reminds me of the holiday after it...

Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

I'm a little weird myself, never felt like an "Adult", I just feel like I'm faking it.
Although, as I get older and have started to fall apart a bit....nope, just falling apart, doesn't make me mature or anything!
As for entertainment, hey, I like what I like, no matter what anyone says about it. I'm currently reading a set of "young adult" novels, Maximum Ride. I cut my science fiction teeth on the Robert A. Heinlein, Juveniles back in the early '70's and have been in love with Science Fiction and Fantasy ever since. Sometimes the young adult novels are nice they move fast and are fun.

Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

I'm seeing a trend here. Maybe no coincidence that we are all in the fantasy/sci-fi forum. I joke about being 28 and holding, but really inside I'm more like 10. Physically though I'm starting to feel my age. (44)

Yes, my son is happy because we get a long weekend. We are heading to the farm my husband recently bought and will stay in the camper for a couple of nights, with the heat cranked up! lol Tomorrow my husband is deep frying a turkey. And my mom is making dinner on Monday.

Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

Have fun in the camper.
Be careful with deep frying the turkey.
Here are some U.S. stats on that.

"Although a mighty delicious tradition, deep-frying a turkey on Thanksgiving can be risky.

Every year deep-fryer fires are responsible for five deaths, 60 injuries, the destruction of 900 homes, and more than $15-million in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

So you want to know which state has the most accidents?

For the last seven years, Texas has led the country in most grease- and cooking-related insurance claims on Thanksgiving Day, with 38 according to insurance company State Farm. Illinois follows, with 27 reports and Pennsylvania and Ohio are tied for third with 23. New York ranked fourth, with 22 claims and South Carolina and Georgia claimed fifth with 16 claims each. "

They didn't mention any Canadian stats....maybe you're better?

My great-nephew, who once blew up a deep-fryer and turkey but fortunately avoided injury, gives out one tip: do it OUTSIDE!

Have fun, Michelle and don't listen to the fearmongers, they'd probably like to go on a camping trip, too j/k of course

I already have an idea but I'm not sure if my drawing skills will be sufficient... I'll give it a shot anyway, I think....
