Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat!

October 2017

GUIDELINES:
On the first of each month a subject, concept or idea will be posted in a thread entitled Fantasy Science Fiction Monthly Challenge and Chat.

All entries must be new original artworks for this challenge in any style or genre of Fantasy or Science Fiction done in any medium, 2D or 3D.
Join in the discussion about the project - it's friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images! Help can be gained from asking but also from looking for resource materials elsewhere such as the Reference Image Library or best of all your own wonderful imagination!
A 'reveal' date for all is 24th of the month - that gives us a little over 3 weeks to make the work, plus few extra days for latecomers.

Please post the finished artwork on this thread at that time.

The October Challenge is....... Halloween

Anything Halloween or Halloween related, anything from sweet and whimsical, to nostalgic, to dark and mysterious, to slightly scary, to downright horrifying!
Have fun!

I know this is a little predictable, but it still might be fun.
Woody, I know you just did that huge Halloween painting, so I'm sorry about this Challenge subject, but maybe you'll want to do a different one in another style?

Okay, I have chosen my subject and d/led two ideas from the Net. But I have two projects to finish first. Make that three. Can he do it? By the deadline? Inquiring minds...oh heck with it. I think I could do it, easy.

Alas, no. There are a dragon and a fairy in it, but neither are costumy or Hallowe'en themed. Better luck next time, right?

Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

Been giving this challenge some thought and some of my ideas are really...out there. Which brings this question...
In your opinion, how would you visually portray something that's terrifying as opposed to something that's horrifying? Since both are subjective so I'm curious about your thoughts. I think horrifying is fairly straight-forward, but terrifying as an image I'm having a hard time nailing down.

To me, Terrifying is the actual act of creating fear in progress. Horrifying is what's left after the carnage.

Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

That's a good way to put it!

I remember seeing an old black and white movie when I was maybe six or seven. There was a dark hallway you could see through the doorway and a girl was sitting at a vanity brushing her hair with just a lamp on. It was all quiet and then slowly you could see that something was watching her from the hall. It leaned enough into the light that you could see that something was there but not what it was. Freaked me the heck out!

Thumbs up Re: Fantasy and Sci-Fi Art Monthly Challenge and Chat! October 2017

Agree, Virginia. The most terrifying movie title, ever, IMHO, is "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs." The film (and play) is not a horror movie itself, but it ought to have been. Veteran directors and screenplay writers, notably Alfred Hitchcock stress that the monster or whatever not be seen until very late in the film. Foreboding and anxiety are better than the best special effects. To my mind, the scene in "The Haunting," (a rare exception to the rule that the book is ALWAYS better than the movie) is the scene where the door bulges in toward the protagonist by an unseen agency.
