I am the queen of not finishing a painting. This one was started maybe 5 years ago- don’t remember for sure. Then a bunch of stuff happened and we moved and now i am finally getting out all the painting supplies and got this one out, only to discover all my reference photos are gone. So I think I will try to wing it. And I am changing the background completely and moving a few things around. Its an adventure. Who knows what will happen! Right now I’m just moving figures around a bit and getting them in place before I start painting in earnest. Don’t know why they are sideways.

my blogDecember 12, 2018 at 10:40 am #745226mtnrunner: I am assuming that the first image ( upper ) is the one you have made the changes to, for there appears to me to be ghost images in the lower painting where you have painted over – Assuming this is the case I like your rework –
Excellent rendering of the subjects –
It would be a little easier to view if the images were rotated –

December 12, 2018 at 11:08 am #745206The upper image is rework I assume as to my eye it is a much better piece – brighter color – it sings! Your talent is amazing and it shows in your work – STUNNING!

I presume you used an iPhone. It remembers the original rotation when uploaded.

We must leave our mark on this worldDecember 12, 2018 at 5:22 pm #745209That’s all of you-Doug for fixing the photos. The first image was what I started with and at this point have just done a wash over that to begin changing the background…. And then I decided to change the figures a bit . its far from finished but I think I know where I want to take it.

my blogDecember 12, 2018 at 7:07 pm #745199Deb, I am so happy to see you back! It’s so nice to see your paintings again. You really are turning this painting on its ear. Both versions have a lot going for them. I’m looking forward to seeing how you complete this piece. It’s such a strong composition! Keep up the great work!

my blogDecember 14, 2018 at 11:36 am #745211So… I think I have the figures where I want them. And because I had lost all my references for the longhorns, and doing all those complex curved horns out of my head seemed too hard, the cattle are now just the usual mix found around here, Angus and Hereford.
So now I can start actually painting the figures, etc.If I can get it done, it will be a gift for our pastor, who, like everyone else around here, is also a rancher.

my blogDecember 15, 2018 at 8:16 am #745208Awh Deb, it’s so good to see you back here again!! I loved the longhorns but I love this too! It’s a scene so many can relate to, myself included from my childhood years. You have the perspective spot on, the viewer’s eye goes right from the front to the cowboys in the back. As usual, brilliant!!

I’ve seen way more polled/dehorned cattle than longhorns, so this change does strike a chord with me. Beautiful update, Deb!

December 16, 2018 at 12:03 am #745213I liked em too. And painting white is so much fun with reflected light and shadow colors- but, honestly, this is easier and more the norm around here.
