HAPPY NEW YEAR OIL PASTELISTS!:clap::clap: I wish you all a happy, safe, healthy, and successful 2019.
First painting of the year completed this morning:
“Freedom of Speech”
Sennelier and Neopastel oil pastels on Clairefontaine Pastelmat (12″ x 15″), no references:It’s my goal to be more experimental this year. I’ve bought some Caran d’Ache Neocolour II, the water soluble wax pastels, and started five new paintings with them. Planning to combine this with oil pastel. Can I post those works in the oil pastel forum?

Nothing left but smoke and cellar, and a woman with a black umbrella...January 2, 2019 at 6:15 am #755031Well done, Sarah. The background is really cool! Of course you can post your Neocolor paintings.

Hurrah! Then here is one I just finished:
“Cocoon”
Caran d’Ache Neocolour II and lots of water for the background with a bit of Sennelier oil pastel, and Senneliers for the figure, on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, 15″ x 12″, Pose Space photo reference for the figure:A couple of closeups:
Playing with the Neocolours has been lots of fun! Thoroughly recommend. They feel just like crayons but the pigment goes on very smoothly and has really good coverage. Wetting them and watching them run is a joy.

Wow! The year’s just started and you are done with two paintings already!
The first one is very dramatic! Catches one’s eye and keeps it fixed
The red in the middle brings some associations with blood. And I am not sure what are the red things around his hips, but they do look like shackles which has interesting parallels with the title
Very cool painting.I also like the second one, the figure is rendered perfectly!
Neocolors, cool stuff! I’d also like to get some watersoluble OPs, though I am thinking about cheaper ones
Did you find they are much harder than Neopastels? Do they have a very different feel from your oil pastels?I love oil pastels and have created a blog about this medium. While the blog posts are in Russian, still I invite you to get inspired with various artists' beautiful OP paintings in my blog's gallery: https://oilpastelist.wordpress.com/gallery

Love your first two of the year. I’m excited to watch you play with the Neocolor – I have a set around here somewhere that I’ve yet to have a play with. This piece makes me want to go throw water, too!
Wonderful work already. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

DOOOOO IIIIITTTTT, terriks! They’re loads of fun  Pastelmat takes the water really well too. I taped mine to hardboard (I think you guys across the pond call it masonite?) and applied the water with a big decorator’s brush over the sink.

Did you find they are much harder than Neopastels? Do they have a very different feel from your oil pastels? They feel exactly like Crayola crayons, not like oil pastels at all. They don’t blend dry either, but they do lay down nice and opaque with better, more solid coverage than any crayon I’ve ever used. Adding water is where they really shine.

This is a little 60 minute study I did from a Pose Space photo with oil paints in the Zorn palette (black, white, yellow ochre, and cadmium red) on cheap canvas paper. It’s just smaller than A4:
I loved the pose and the lighting. Here it is in oil pastel!
“In Your Heart, There Lies a Storm”
Caran d’Ache Neocolour II for the background, and Senneliers and Cray-Pas Specialist for the figure, on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, 12″ x 15″:I’m feeling so flippin’ enthusiastic and excited about my paintings this year (I know we’re only a week in, LOL). I really feel I’ve broken free of a rut and I’m producing my best work ever

The Neocolour IIs are just awesome for visually interesting backgrounds. The last one was done in two goes, with a day to dry inbetween. All the colours in the middle were done on the second day.
I also have some Derwent art bars, also a water soluble wax pastel, and I gave them a go but the pigment load seems to be much lower than the Neocolour IIs and the result was very anaemic.

Well, I think your work has been pretty steady in the excellence category, but then, I’m a fan! I’m excited that you feel excited, though – feeling like you’ve been in a rut really drags you down, artistically and otherwise. So, yay!
I really like these backgrounds you’ve been achieving. They are each unique and really give extra flavor to your figures.

January 9, 2019 at 10:35 am #755083Aww! Thanks so much, terriks
In the spirit of experimentation I’ve been collaging. I don’t recall ever doing any collage before, but it was lots of fun. The figure in the collage is from a failed painting. Prepare your eyes, it’s absolutely disgusting:
I don’t even know what I was thinking. Anyway, I cut him out. He’s much happier in his new home!
Neopastels and various papers (figure painted on Pastelmat) on board, 9″ x 12″:
I haven’t settled on a title yet…
