Welcome to the February challenge!
I hope you find some images to be stimulating and testing!!!:)
Very few rules! –
-
[*]Pen and Ink
[*]Colour and other mediums may also be used but the majority of the work should be Pen and Ink – more than 50% pen and ink work!
[*]Any surface!
[*]Any size.
[*]Any number of entries!
[*]You may crop/zoom/use any part , or all, of an image!
[*]Post your work in this thread with any relevant information. Please, do abide by the rules and make sure your pen work is very evident – it is, after all, the PEN and ink forum! Thank you:)
All images, except the ice bubbles by Lady Carol, are from the RIL – the larger versions are worth perusing as most have good resolution.

February 5, 2018 at 10:45 am #558076Love the pictures! I decided to try a more cartoon approach the cat. It is just less than A4, done using a dip pen.
February 5, 2018 at 12:17 pm #558028That’s rather nice Isobel … good shape! Thanks for joining in.
Cheers, Maureen

February 7, 2018 at 5:17 am #558079Cleaned off my scanner. I would welcome some advice on how to improve my hatching/crosshatching. Mine is very untidy. Or is it all down to practice? Advice welcome!
February 7, 2018 at 6:02 am #558080I did this one with a gel pen and no guidelines. It was quite interesting. I had to fix some mistakes, and ended up with the manga look:lol:. It was done on an A4 sketchbook page.
February 7, 2018 at 11:48 am #558030You are a busy bee Isobel!
The big cat is good practice for training the eye to observe – and you’ve done well here.
The tree across the river pic is a complex one because, I think, the image itself needed sharper tones (the photo) so it calls for the artist to increase the tonal balance (In my opinion!)…..i.e. to me, the reflections and tree get lost in each other! Giving the trunk more emphasis in tone and pattern and playing down the reflections of all the greenery would help I think. There are better penmen (or penpeople!) than I who might help more with the hatching question but I’m not a great lover of cross-hatching ….. I know it’s a standard technique but I think it does often look untidy.
For the bank reflections I’d go for vertical line hatching.
For the foliage I’d make foliage-type marks and shapes.
For areas such as the water right under the bank on the right, more solid black – there are areas elsewhere to balance such black bits too.:)Hope this helps a bit!
