Signing Photography?

Normally when I do a painting or sketch, I either sign (sketch) or paint my initials. What do I do with a photo? Do most people sign on their photos or leave it anonymous? Or perhaps sign and date on the back?

Re: Signing Photography?

Many of our pro photographers stamp their name on their phots they display on the web. Check out the Shutterbug for examples by Moccasin and others.

I have seen phots at shows that were signed and dated unobtrusively with a silver or gold ink pen.

I will be signing mine once I get good enuf!!!

Greg

Um, I have seen photos in matted frames with signature/date/#printed on the mat, if you print it as a gallery wrap, you can either add signature with something like photoshop before printing, but then you have to "guess" where the signature falls, or you can use a paint marker, as suggested, to sign each finished print.

Re: Signing Photography?

Depends on a lot of things, with +++ and --- for each option.

If you sign the mat, that's negated if/when they reframe/remat the print. But signing in pencil on the mat seems the more "professional" option to me.

Signing on the back? This does document for the customer who the photographer is; you can include your contact info.

Sign on the front in silver or gold metallic ink? Works well for B&W prints. I've done it, but it was nearly impossible to find such a pen that was safe (acid free).

In general, I lean towards a subtle signature in pencil on the mat. Sometimes this requires dis-assembling the frame/mat, sometimes I meet the buyer at the framers.
