Good job. Nice perspective. I like how you painted the crowd in the background.

Love this city market scene, Bob! You're doing well with acrylics. What size?

Re: Market Day

I think this is really very good, especially for someone who has just taken up Acrylics.

The composition is lively and works quite well. You have enough going on to create a sense of life, but the scene isn't too cluttered. Given the light and shadows, it seems like a sunny day. You could enhance that by putting highlights on the bodies of the people that are directly being hit by the sun. If you have a reference you will probably see that the faces/clothes/ that are in the sun have a lighter value. Same thing with the awnings and umbrellas. The reference may show a bright side if there is sun. The perspective is a wee bit wonky in a couple of places, but for me that is what makes a scene like this really engaging.

Keep painting, I think you will do very well.

Re: Market Day

Welcome to the forum Bob.
For a first, you're doing well - and Colin, above, has made some very helpful comments.

I like the feeling of a sunny but cool day. I like the way you've handled a crowded scene.

Some tips that might help -

You seem to be using the paint pretty thickly but a bit dry - add a little water to make it flow better - be patient, it often needs more than one coat with acrylics to get a solid colour!

Try to avoid using black - it's usually deadening to colour - make your black by using mixes from your palette - that way you'll get a richness to the colour.

Remember shadows are transparent and you can see forms in them - not just silhouetted against them.

We run a monthly challenge called Different Strokes - near the top of the forum - often makes us think differently and it's fun! Do take a look and it would be nice to have you join us.

Re: Market Day

Nice busy market.
I really like the Tudor style on the one building, gives it a great feeling of the area.
