Re: Himba Beauty WIP

No update just yet...just wanted to say thank you

Patrick...I appreciate the kind (funny, too) words but I have to tell you I do a lot of layering...scratch, re-ink, scratch, re-ink, etc, til I get the smooth look I'm after. When I re-ink, I use diluted ink...maybe 50-50 with water, sometimes less, sometimes more. It means a lot more scratching and takes longer but I do get where I want to go eventually.

Mark, Judy, thank you!

Diana...aw shucks ...you know I feel the same about you and your work!

VenKat and Boots, thank you!

Pamela...one word replies are very much appreciated, too!

Harold and Tony, thank you!

It's pouring rain (much needed!) so I will be scratching all day so I will update a bit later.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

Lorna your skin technique definitely has it's own unique look, amazing. I really like the shadows from the braids along the side of her face. You've always been so good at portraits but I really think that you have developed your technique to such an amazing level now. This one will be a show stopper when finished.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

Update.

Thank you so much Diane, Wendy, Karen, Harold and Tracey!

I thought I'd show you the messy stage(s) I go through to make the skin look smooth...this is really awful! As you can see, I have finished off the face for now, the neck, a bit of the necklaces and the left shoulder. On the left breast I have done several layers of scratching and re-inking...at this point I have re-inked again and will rescratch for the last time I think. It looks so out of shape right now without the shadows...also looks a bit big but I hope that will change witht he new layer.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

I think that's a Nebula in her breast

I love the way you've done the shadow on her face on her left cheek and under her lips. That adds so much presence to her.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

update sorta.

Thank you Sue!

Baglady...Patrick did take a gorgeous photo didn't he?!

Pamela...??? Not sure what you are referring to???

Patrick...I was watching an old Star Trek movie when I did that! (I'm not kidding!) One of the things I liked so much about your photo was all the reflected light in the shadow areas, especially on her face...glad you like that!

Okay...in order to be a bit more clear on how I do the skin I've started her right breast but have left it with the first layers showing with no re-inking.

I highly contrasted this so it would show up good.
1. First very fine light layer, fairly long strokes.
2. 2nd layer, slightly different angle from the 1st, equally light and long strokes.
3. Again, a slightly different angle and shorter, light strokes.
4. A couple more layers of scratches changing the angle each time. When the whole breast has reached this point I will re-ink with diluted ink
( forgot 5)
6. Is the same as the previous post where I had done the scratching and then re-inked.
7. I started to rescratch this area...very very lightly...I don't want it very white and the only reason it looks like that now is because of the high contrast.

This is what it looks like without the high contrast...my scratches are extremely light handed all the way through and when an area is done it feels as smooth as the area that hasn't been scratched. Only the very whitest area like her mud hair and the one necklace (so far) can be felt the tinest bit.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

(I think Pamela was referring to Baglady thinking this was mine - I wish it was!!)

Thanks for the explanation. I've tried this 'feathering', as you've called it in the past, but I struggle to get the scratches so light. For me, they either only scratch the ink without actually removing it, or they go right through. I'm going to have to work on that.

Re: Himba Beauty WIP

Thank you kindly Lorna for demonstrating your technique so clearly. I havent yet been brave enough to try and portray human skin but this is a big help, I would like to try in the near future...
This is coming along beautifully. I love how you handle the lighting...looking forward to seeing more
