Re: "Down on the Farm" Show - WIPs

I really like the way you adjusted your reference photo. Played around with the greyscale/contrast on some photo's I may be using, and really like the results. Will definately use this in the future. Thanks for sharing.
I think the sunflower is gorgous.

Re: "Down on the Farm" Show - WIPs

Thanks, Angela & Susan!

Susan, I'm glad you found the photos helpful. I always adjust my photos to some degree - cropping, contrast adjustment, making judgement calls on what to add or leave out, etc., but I want this series to be high contrast, so I'm really pushing it.

BTW, that was a home-grown sunflower.

Ann, stop making excuses and let's see another update. :-)

I love what you've done with the petals so far. And good luck with the center of the flower!

Re: "Down on the Farm" Show - WIPs

Well, I finished the center of the flower last night. It wasn't so much difficult as it was confusing! If you've ever tried counted cross-stitch, it was sort of like that. I had some of the components mapped out, and just had to work my way around, adding bits based on how they related to other bits. It was easy to get lost. I had to keep putting it down to give my brain a rest!

Here's a close-up of the center:

I will color this, but I may wait until I have some other boards done, but then again, I may not . . . I'm thinking about consistency for the show, but I only have one bright yellow flower board, so it probably doesn't matter.

The next two photos I have printed are for "the Ratter" and "the Herder", our dog Arrow and a border collie (but not our Magpie, 'cause she's not the most typical-looking bc).

Wow, very impressive piece. Beautiful work on the petals and center, would love to see this colored.

Re: "Down on the Farm" Show - WIPs

Thanks for your comments, everyone! I'm really glad you like it, I had fun with it. I hope the other 14 boards in the series will be as enjoyable to scratch.

I just sort of jumped into this one, trying to figure out a less time-intensive technique than my usual stippling. I figured that really pushing the contrast would work, so I'll be doing the same for the other boards (and coloring them). Although the center took some time, the rest of it was relatively time-efficient and there won't be any complicated things like the center on the other boards. Because I just started blasting away on this one, the background leaf at the bottom is stylized and it stands out too much. I'll knock it back substantially with dark green color. There will be some dark green parts behind some of the petals as well.
