Re: Why aren't my watercolors glowing?

What makes a watercolour glow! Its not the colour!!! Forget the theories, the books, DVDs, the science and look at the work of artists who know how to paint. Here is an artist who doesnt have to use colour(s) because she doesnt need to. Her paintings sing with luminosity because she knows how to paint.

Good luck!

Yes, Ms. Artin is a gifted tonalist! Her work has contrast, mood, grit, even photographic qualities in some.

But luminous? Luminousity is such an elastic term that we could debate it forever. I, for one, don't associate luminousity with her paiintings. Just me.

But forget color? Never!

Sling paint!

Char, I ordered your suggested book also, just now. I am thinking that will help me with my crisp and clean paintings I am wanting also. Can't wait to get it.

I like those Wendy Artin paintings! They're beautiful. I especially like her still life paintings. Luminous? Yes - they are full of light! Albeit always a cool light. And I, for one, consider black to be a color.

I enjoyed Susanna Spann's book and think her paintings are glowing with value contrast and glowing color contrast. She wrote Painting Crystal and Flowers in Watercolor. She has written many articles and won hundreds of awards as noted in her resume found at her website.
