Started a new painting of a cool lookin’ critter I found in my backyard last year. This large cicada was a beautiful pale green with crazy alien eyes. Apparently this is either a 13 or 17 year cycle cicada… so I won’t be seeing, or hearing them again for a while in Southern Ontario. Worthy of a painting for sure! This 8×10 oil.

This is really good! I’ve always liked hearing cicadas, though I’ve never seen one. Nice detail and I like the transparent wings too. The background colour was a good choice.

Taking a second pass at this guy and building up some thicker paint. I’m hoping to go for a more suggestive/abstract finish with this in the end.. ambiguous edges and lines around the side of the body and wings. Also trying hard to get that fuzzy look for parts of the back carapace and such.
