Still in my great funk. Here are 2 small ones I did recently, 5 x7 watercolor. I can’t seem to stick to one way of painting – I get half way done with something, get bored with it and I’m off looking to do something else – hence working on smaller sizes until I figure out what I really want to paint – whatever that may be!
C&C welcome.

The best way to get out of a creative slump is to keep doing what you’re doing — exploring different ways to paint and draw. Eventually something will click and you will find a key that will get you excited about trying it in the next one. I hope you are not trashing the pieces you consider “failures” because sometimes there is something there you only see when you go back and look at it with a calm and more objective eye. I like both of these small pieces, but the second really grabs my attention! I really like how you handled the whole scene. Especially those soft transitions from the darks to the mid-and lighter tones. It almost has an ethereal quality about it. Though it’s not really stated, I feel as if there is a foot bridge in the distance. Like I sense it’s there but it’s not overtly stated. That makes it interesting to me. I would consider that a success!
I think you need to allow yourself to “play” without direction. Kids do this stuff all the time and let their imaginations take it wherever it leads them, even though the stuff they’re drawing probably looks horrible to an adult. Who cares? That’s the sort of risk taking and attitude we need sometimes.
Cheers!
Randy
March 2, 2019 at 4:19 pm #791746Sorry your funk persists CaliAnn. Your work is lovely: delicate but tinged with a little sadness. If it does reflect how you are feeling about your work, I think expressing yourself that way may well be therapeutic. You haven’t been painting very long and I imagine what you are going through happens to everyone at some point! You are doing two things right: working small and trying different things. Why should you paint one way only?
Vincent said to make beautiful things takes effort, disappointment and perseverance. You are clearly doing the first, experiencing the second, and I would urge you to carry on with the third. Try and finish your work. A lot of what we do in our daily lives is boring, but we still do it. Finishing your work will make you stronger, teach you more and I have no doubt you will pleasantly surprise yourself. If its not working as Randy says, leave it for a while. Go back later. Have a few on the go at once, in different styles, colours and mediums, so you can flip from one to the other depending on your mood. Maybe your boredom is more a lack of confidence. If you don’t finish something you will not face the disappointment of realising it was a failure, but then you will never experience the thrill of knowing it was a success. Even if its no good, look at it and decide where you went wrong. Be bold!

March 2, 2019 at 5:19 pm #791745I like both of these! Good drawing, and good handling of the brush and medium. I’ll echo what the others said…..keep painting and let it happen.
March 2, 2019 at 6:34 pm #791737Beautiful work! The first one is my favorite. Loose and juicy just the way watercolor should be! I think you should be less concerned about what you paint and just PAINT. You have a wonderful style and presentation of your work. Paint for fun and it will all come tigether for you!

Re – I can’t seem to stick to one way of painting – Then don’t – Just have fun following your instincts, painting in a variety of methods, techniques & subjects.
I agree with Richard regarding – I think you should be less concerned about what you paint and just PAINT

March 3, 2019 at 1:16 pm #791738Ann, I think these are excellent. If this is a funk, ride it for all it is worth. I love the solid and then dissolving lines. Gary

March 3, 2019 at 2:08 pm #791732Hi Ann, I think the works I have seen of yours are very romantic and soft looking. Maybe an impression of what you are seeing. You don’t strike me as a detailed painter. I would say these watercolour paintings are a good way of being expressive. Just go with the ‘flow’. Be expressive and ‘enjoy’ your painting! I like these two watercolours very much they are lovely!

March 3, 2019 at 3:09 pm #791739These are both so pretty and have your elegant style in them. I love the curvy flowing tree trunks of the first one. Keep going! Whenever my paintings are going terribly wrong I tell myself that now it’s just a practice board but I’m going to finish it anyway. It takes the pressure off and I’ve ended up with some of my favorite paintings from those.
