Re: Monthly CP Challenge - June 2009

I finally got around to doing "Message in a bottle". As you can see, I changed the background. I was scared of trying to do all those rocks, so I put a sandy beach as a background. I hope it works! I added the bucket and shovel to add some interest to the beach. I hope it works!

C&Cs welcome...even though I have put my signature on it, I have not sprayed it with fixative yet.

The shadows were a little tricky, and I couldn't see that far leg and foot very well. I hope I have accomplished the illusion of water and the reflections.

Cryork, Your child in the sand is very cute. I might darken the sand in the back to give it a little depth but otherwise. the baby is beautiful.

Thanks, Jan! I couldn't get the face to look much like the reference, and it was pretty much in shadow, so I'm glad that you think it looks ok.

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - June 2009

Char--
Sorry it's taken me a bit to get in to comment.

Couple of things you may want to consider for other pieces-- the "halo" effect... it looks like you pushed/encouraged it on this one. That can be an interesting/good thing, depending on the piece. And a brightly lit, sunshiny child is a good choice for that. But you may want to practice letting the background colors still show to some extent-- Around the baby's face, you've almost gone back to white.

I like the back ground you created for this piece. Good use of your imagination! Although if you do something like this again, maybe reconsider the color of the bucket? That red just *grabs* my attention, y'know?

Now... Surely you have "Ms. Sandy Toes" from the July challenge on your list of pics to try soon, right? I'd love to see you do her loose, swirly, wind-tossed hair!

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - June 2009

Hello

This is the first time I have tried to draw an animal. I have been really impressed by everyones drawings of animals in this forum, I thought I would give "chipmunks by stalkthedawn" a try. I used primsacolour pencils on white arches watercolour paper 300gsm hot pressed smooth 148x210mm.

Any help welcome, ithink it needs some more depth in the wood, I am also a bit nervous about doing a background.
Cheers
Julie

Rosemary, thanks for the suggestions (I'm alittle late getting back to you). I already did the "Sand Artist" before I did this one.

Julie, you are doing a good job on this. It doesn't look like your first time drawing an animal. I'm sure Rosemary will jump in and give you some help on the wood. Great job on the eye!

Hi

I have worked a bit on the wood, and deepened the darker fur

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - June 2009

Julie--
You're doing great on this. I'm not an animal artist, so I'm not going to be a whole lot of help with this-- But you're definitely getting fluffy-fur laid in very nicely.

As far as background is concerned... I'm reposting the greyscale version of Chippy-- do you see how the darker background helps to offset the lighter colored fluff on the tail? When you're doing test swatches & practice bits to figure out how you want to do the background, don't forget to think about how it will work with the fur.

You're doing great. Just keep going!
