Two girls in a tree

"The Girls", Atelier Chroma Interactive acrylic, 24in x 20, wrapped canvas. xposted in Acrylic forum.

(Image not true to color - shadows and transitions are less harsh.)

All comments and critiques very welcome.

Problem area(s) for me were, and still are, the lower arm of the upper girl and upper girl's face seems too dark for rest of picture. Atelier Interactive keeps darkening up on me, no matter what glaze I put over it. Should dark green background be more spring green? Help!

Re: Two girls in a tree

Hi Pat- a fine painting so far. It is challenging to get two portraits and landscape all working.
My thoughts are to grey that big area of green in the middle, it is dominating at the moment- this should make the girls more prominent. The distant trees give a sense of place and are ok.
The lower girl's fingers are not reading true- don't seem to be connecting to the surface of the tree.
I can't comment on features without seeing the photo- the upper girl's face doesn't seem too dark- but you are the judge.
This is a good concept- looking forward to see where you take it.

Re: Two girls in a tree

Thank you Bethany. I will put some shadows under the fingers to show they are touching. I will figure out how to grey down the bg. Features are very close but not perfect. The client will have to tell me yay or nay re their faces.

Thanks again - great help.

Re: Two girls in a tree

The finished product is in the hands of the owner. She was thrilled and one of the girls was with her and was very happy with her part. Here is the finished one and 2 details of the faces. A photo really shows the bits needing correction. The hair on the lower girls runs parallel to the tree and should have noticed it. I definitely made a lot of changes from the previous image I had here.

Re: Two girls in a tree

Hey - I just found this portrait and I think it's great! I have visions of a family portrait (don't you love/hate those visions) with my husband behind a tree, and I like the pose of that girl in the back. Maybe that's how I'll have him pose. Now, if I could just get my 2 1/2 year old to stay still long enough for a pose.... :-)
