Waalhaven,Rotterdam.mvAlchiba arrives with a cargo of coal from Baltimore in february 1956.Strong cross-winds cause some problems for the tugs and the boatmen....Gouache,30x40 cm.

The Norwegian Fernpoint,owners:Fernley&Eger,discharging coal into barges at the Yard of Frans Swarttouw,Waalhaven,1960.

An absolutely astounding body of work! I can only marvel at the tenacity required to believe in such a project, to research and then execute in such fine detail this excellent work which is of considerable interest not only for the artistic merit but for the historical content.

A misty sunday-morning at Swarttouw's Yard,Waalhaven,Rotterdam,1960.The Dutch coaster ASPERA (1957-gt,385-owner J.Pronk,Groningen) arrived with a cargo of British coal from Goole,the night before. Crane C will transit the coal into a barge,to be taken to a powerstation,the next day.In front of Aspera: the Dutch bulker Ossendrecht.
Gouache,30x42 cm.

I'm sure this series of paintings should be hanging in the offices of The Port Of Rotterdam.
They are a record of a way of life, all but forgotten, with today's Bulk and Containerised cargo handling.
