Talking Rainbow Lorikeet

Did this one today-- I experimented with using india ink under the darkest areas, as someone had suggested. That worked really well.

That is absolutely gorgeous! Of course I am very partial to bird images though.

The only thing I would have done different is to make the background a little less saturated. While the leaves are really stunning to look at, they compete with the bird which.

You did an awesome job on his face, eyes and beak!

What type of pencils and paper did you use? Also, what is the size of the image?

Great job!

Julie this is very nice. I like the ink undercoating. It really enhances the colors. If you decide you wish to subdue the background. Use the complimentary color over it and it will soften the brightness of the leaves.

Wow!!! Bee-u-ti-ful! I love the colors you used! As Kimo, I am also partial to bird drawings so this really caught my attention. I agree that all you need to do is tone down the bg a little. Really very beautiful painting, Julie!

yes the background is competing with the bird. I'd also add a few more highlights to the bird to make him really pop...wonderful job on the bird btw.

Thanks

Thanks for the input, guys. I used primsacolor pencils on wc paper. This was a real experiment for me-- a new subject, new materials and definitely the brightest colors I've ever worked with. Unfortunately I don't think I can add highlights or tone down anything at this point, the paper just won't accept any more pigment, and I already sprayed the thing. The next piece I do, I'll have a better idea of how to approach the background as well. It's all a learning experience!

Julie next time be sure to build up your layers slowly so that when it's just below the point of burnishing you can step back and still see what needs to be done a bit differently.

I look forward to your next piece!
