This is the second of two small commissioned paintings that I did for a client in the Texas Hill Country. This one was commissioned as a surprise gift to his friend, but I’ve been informed that it might not make it that far. ;-P
This painting was particularly challenging, because the reference photo I was given was taken on a cloudy day with no direct sun and no defined shadows and a plain, dull, gray overcast sky. The sky I painted was purely from my imagination. I also added the boulders and granite slab per the client’s wishes.
In the end I was quite concerned about whether or not the client would like it. This was his response, via email, after seeing it for the first time:
“So beautiful, Hollan! Tears here (not kidding).”
I don’t think I could possibly ask for a better response.
Oil on canvas 6″ x 6″
Limited palette: Titanium Wht, Cad Yellow Lemon, Cad Red Med, French Ultramarine, Burnt Umber.Cheers,

I'm tired of being a wanna-be artist. I wanna be AN ARTIST!October 22, 2018 at 11:30 am #715041Very nice use of limited palette. Since you painted with (mostly) opaque colors, that required a lot of careful planning in the color mixtures.
