        Greetings!:D
This is my first time posting to this group.

I recently returned from a 6-day plein air residency with a bunch of other artists and our host organization (CPAWS-OV / Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Ottawa Valley branch), who took us up the wild Dumoine River in Québec. (The Dumoine River is an undammed watershed that flows from La Verendry Park down into the Ottawa River just north of the town of Deep River.) Stunning scenery! We all camped together and each day went out to paint along the river.

I spent a few days on this 12″ x 9″ acrylic painting of Robinson Lake (a widening of the Dumoine, and where we camped), looking across from the beach.

The weather was quite changeable while we were there, so I could only paint a bit each day; when the light was right.

One thing that really helped me to do this in acrylics was my new Masterson Stay-dry palette box set-up. I’m so glad I bought it just before camp!

        Cheers, Lauren

Hi Lauren, nice to see you in here, I have just recently started posting some things here too, part of my effort to try to improve my painting!

I haven’t tried acrylics for plein air painting for a long time… preferring the easier blending and longer open time of oils… but great work on the water here, and I like the atmospheric background

            Thanks, Mac!

I usually do plein air in oils, too. However, this was my first time going on the CPAWS art retreat, and I was concerned with the logistics of oils at the camp, and that we had to bring out all the material used. Cleaning up from oils seemed rather daunting, so I went with acrylics. It worked out rather well. That Masterson Stay-Dry palette really helped, as well as the humid weather (and on and off rain), to keep the paints from drying out.

I also haven’t worked out how to complete a plein air painting out in the field when using oils. Takes me a lot of time with acrylics, too, but at least they were never too wet to work on. All a learning experience.

I also found that for this painting I used a pretty limited palette — though I’d put out quite a few colours — which made remixing colours easier.

            Cheers, Lauren

Beautiful painting. I use Golden Open Acrylics – they stay workable for a good long time.

Beautiful. I, also, particularly like the water and lily pads.
