Re: Pastel storage: mixed or one by one

I LOVED the other thread showing the different pastel brands. I have one full set of Senniliers and I store them in two places. When I first got them I cut each one in half (gasp! Most of them crumbled). I put one half back into ONE of the wooden trays that came with the set (slid the big wooden box under the bed, empty. This tray is what I normally work from and I keep it on top of a TV tray next to my easel. THEN, I put the other halves with their same little foam containers into a ROZ box (they all fit!) and that's my portable set that I take with me outside to do plein air or to my life drawing. I love it. Now I'm going to have to think of another system when I break down someday and get those Unisons...and Mount Visions....Sigh. SOME day!

Re: Pastel storage: mixed or one by one

I would love to try figure drawing in pastels ;-)
I have problems with using colors while drawing the figure, and the pastels could help me go in that direction.

Donna, you are so lucky!
And brave to break all your new pastels at once. :-)

Re: Pastel storage: mixed or one by one

I store my in all different ways. I have a big wooden tray with pastels sorted first by warm or cool, and then by hue. I also have many sets in their original boxes, and I take care to return each piece back to its original spot. But on the other hand, I also have sets that have gotten scrambled, and...

Heck, when I paint in oil I only have to worry about where my seven colors go on the palette!

Re: Pastel storage: mixed or one by one

I sort mostly by value/color. I am a bit of a slob so I tend to toss them back into the box while I am working....which means little foam niches would not really work. After things get too messed up I sort a bit again so I can mess it all up again! But it seems to work for me.
But I think everyone is different and you need to do what works.

Ok Donna my Sennelier's are way too neat and tidy. That trunk can be a pain. I LOVE seeing your set, I am inspired to get mine dirty.
