Beautiful flowers, Mira! That was a great idea, using the colored paper and not having to think about a background. The colors look terrific and the tulips really do pop. Glad the Specialists liked the paper, too.

Hi Lil, this painting fits our challenge very nicely - thanks for sharing! You did a great job for just starting out with OP's. I love this black paper for helping make the flowers stand out. Your vase is lovely!

Re: January2020 oil pastel challenge + chat

Lovely work here, guys, well done!

I did my 'red' painting and thought afterwards, well it's not ever so red, is it? I shall post anyway, I was thinking of the challenge when I did it!

'The Calm Before the Storm', Van Gogh's (zorn palette except for the brown hair), on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, 7" x 9", reference from Unsplashed as I'm not very experienced with painting clothes yet:

I've come to really appreciate that waxy, oil pastelly look, so I blended only with the oil pastels themselves and came away from the new painting with clean fingers for the first time ever

Great job, Sarah. I love the red and gray together, a beautiful combo! I agree with Rich, the clothing looks great to me.

Christel, your amaryllis is lovely! Those little bits of surrounding green really make the petals stand out. As always, your detail work is exceptional.

Here's mine for the Red challenge! I was thinking mostly of a field of red flowers, then decided on an ocean in the background, and I think it got away from me. Neopastels, Mungyos, some Senns on 9x12 Arches oil paper.

I love this Terri. I like the arrangement of the buildings and rooftops. The addition of windows, etc. is effective. Well done, it feels like i'm in this field walking down a slope. Great job

Re: January2020 oil pastel challenge + chat

Thanks so much, Rich and Christel!

Rich, all I did for the windows were a few scrape backs. It was easy and I was pleased! The sense of going down a slope was what I was trying for, so I'm glad you got that from the painting.

Re: January2020 oil pastel challenge + chat

Here's a recent one. Second pic shows the "reds" I used in his skin and background. This is Cesar Chavez 12x16 inches.

One of my goals for 2020 is to get better at portraits. So I plan to do a lot of them. This is Cesar Chavez towards the end of his life. He passed away in the early 90's, and I actually met him in person in the late 80's.
