Anne's Graphite Sketches 2016

On the suggestion of one of the members of this site, I've decided to set up a journal of my sketches. I've been using a Canson 5.5 x 8.5 sketch book for all my drawings. The paper is fine textured (according to the description on the cover) and is a light cream colour.

I've done a number of drawing that so far I have been posting in the Drawing and Sketching forum. I think I'll gradually shift to this area, to leave the Drawing and Sketching forum for general questions.

This first drawing I post here I'll cross post to that forum as well.

Anne

A covered bridge from a picture in the gallery.

I wasn't too happy with the rocks on the right side so I did a couple of small drawing with different types of rock in them.

Welcome! Beautiful shading in your graphite sketches. The bridge is impressive.

Thanks Joan.

I always seem to have an issue with my photos showing a lot of whitish areas in the dark places. I guess I'll have to keep experimenting with my camera technique.

Nice shading. Do you ever work from life? Photos lose detail in the dark areas and the brightest, whereas your eye sees better.

Those covered bridges are full of character. Why did they put all that work into covering them? I know here some ancient bridges were lined with small shops but this doesn't appear to have room for anything .... Yet people put that work in for some reason?

Occasionally I draw from life but recently, not often. As for the covering of the bridges, generally those are seen in areas where they get piles of snow in the winter. I don't know if the original ones had wooden planks for a roadway or not, but it meant that they didn't have to worry about plowing them.

Still sticking to a 'rocks' theme this drawing is of one of the Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick Canada. They are also called flowerpot rocks because of the way the trees and bushes grow on the top of the pedestal shaped rock formations.

Re: Anne's Graphite Sketches 2016

Thanks for the bridge explanation

What an amazing rock formation

I make my students work from life at least part of the time. Their drawing and observation improve so much with it. That then helps when working from photos.

I know that in some parts of the world the weather is well into spring but up north there is still a bit of winter hanging on. Here is another drawing from the Reference Gallery of a sparrow in winter.

What a great rock formation. I like your subtle shading on the bird sketch.

Nice to see your work here! The bridge is really nicely done. However, I am a major 'bird nerd' so of course I gravitate to the sparrow drawing! Looking forward to seeing more.

It just so happens that I found another nice picture in the reference gallery of a bald eagle. I think it turned out quite well. The picture is courtesy of Virginia Spencer.
