Beloved Bauer Boy

Hello all,
I did this painting as a gift for my Husband Joe's Business Associate,
who recently lost their beautiful white lab Bauer.
He loved to play with his tennis ball, especially in the lake.
He lived in Texas.

Its on a 16x20" Staplebacked canvas with painted sides.

Reference photos:

Sketch:

Underpainting:

Update 1:

Update 2:

Update 3:

Update 4:
Added some highlights in the water.

Update 5:

Update 6:
I decided to subdue the water a little I didnt want it to distract from Bauer
I also tried to make his eyes a little more open like the ref closeups
rather then the water reference, where he's squinting.

Closeup update 6:

FINAL PAINTING: colors are a bit more bright then in photo.

Closeup FINAL:

Re: Beloved Bauer Boy

THANK YOU so very much Maureen and Gayle!
It really means alot to me.
I did try to make his eyes more open like the c/u ref
and less squinty as he was in the water reference.

That is amazing! I've watched with much interest in your progress with this one. Labs, especially yellow ones, are my most favorite dogs. You did such a beautiful job, I hope you are very proud of yourself. I'm sure Bauer's family will treasure this portrait and the memories of their special boy forever. Congrats to you!

Hi Janet, THANK YOU Ever so much, it means a great deal to me.
I'm glad you like the finished product and yes I am proud of this one!
His owner was overjoyed just seeing the progress of it,
which I was hesitant to share.. but only when it was close to being done.
I hope to mail it to them in a few days, varnishing it now.
THANKS Again!!

Re: Beloved Bauer Boy

Absolutely Perfect Kathy! You have captured a great likeness of him and I can feel his personality through this painting. Your husbands associate should be incredibly touched by this. This is a great painting! I know your reference image doesn't show it, but the water may feel a little more 'wet' if you sneak in a highlight or two, particularly around the areas where the water meets the dog.

Re: Beloved Bauer Boy

Kathie. What a beautiful painting of a gorgeous dog. I am sure your husband's colleague will be overjoyed with this tribute. You have done a good job on the water - enough movement not to detract from Bauer (the German name for 'Farmer'!). I love it.

Thank you very much Chammi!!
Your comments are greatly appreciated!
His owner was thrilled to tears saying I captured all of his features perfectly,
so I'm very pleased.
