Post How to look at abstract art

Quote:
For his appearance on the Museum of Modern Art and BBC web series The Way I See It, Steve Martin chose two obscure American abstract artists who perfectly illustrate the relationship between the theory and practice of abstraction.

Doesn't seem to say much unless I'm missing something. I want to like Steve Martin, but it's hard.

Martin's comment about theory sometimes getting in the way of enjoying the work resonated with me and I quite enjoyed the interview with Jason Moran.

Right, I forgot about him saying that - much agree.

Re: How to look at abstract art

Thank you very much for sharing the link.

Martin emphasizes a good/great work of art makes him want to spend time with it, from afar, mid-distance and up-close & personal. I like his perspective, probably because I agree with it.

With abstraction, there is discovery and upon subsequent glances, re-discovery. I find this is true whether I'm painting or appreciating.
