Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter The Legend of Kukaohia'aka'laka and Kauakuahiwa (WIP)

X-post from oil painting!

This is a drawing I did for my new painting that I'm starting. I'm starting to do some legends from Hawaiian mythology and this is my first attempt. I usually do an outline drawing like this, then colored pencil, then I get it onto canvas.

This is the story:
Kukaohia'aka'laka and his sister Kauakuahiwa came to the island of Hawaii to live with their families. The brother and his family by the sea, and the sister and her family in the uplands. One day, Kauakuahiwa came down to the sea to bring her brother's family fresh vegetables from the mountains. Her stingy sister-in-law deceives Kauakuahiwa bye telling her that there were no fish. Saddened by this treatment, Kauakuahiwa transforms her husband and children into rats and herself into a spring. She appears before her brother in spirit form to tell him of her fate. He finds the spring and dives in, transforming himself into an ohia lehua tree that flows blood if broken.

I think I'm going to take off her lower legs from just below the knee and arms just above the elbows so that she looks like she's a part of the water instead of popping out of it. I also might break a branch so that a little bit of blood comes out.

Oh, and they don't have clothes on because ancient Hawaiians little kids didn't wear any. I might put a skirt on the woman, but the skirts are so ugly and stiff, I'm still debating it.

Stacy, very good legend and you have given me lots to look at already. Totally agree with your idea of a partial being in the spring. I'm looking forward to see it in color. I'm imagining that it would be strong bold colors everywhere. I think naked people looks more real. How long has the Hawaiian skirt been in existence?

Probably a 100 years or so pre-contact. They were naked for most of their activities. Even when the clothes started it was just enough to cover the genitals after puberty started. But by all accounts they ran naked most of the time.

Hey, I like the legs, and so well proportioned! Legends and allegory are so much fun to illustrate and you have so much to see here! I sure hope you find time to paint it.
BTW, I just watched a TV travel show on those Islands that went into some of the native history and I'm already looking for some web pages or book about the history before Europeans took over.

Colored pencil update (just as a color layout):

Next is getting it onto a canvas.

Oh also Skylynx!

It's actually kind of hard to find good books on Hawaii (in my opinion) since a lot of it seems to take sides and twist information. Which is totally understandable on both sides. It's actually a very complicated history that has so many grey areas opinions are going to vary so much. Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown but Kamehameha III encouraged European involvement before that and the problems with the trading empire once the sandalwood was gone, blah, blah, blah. It's very up and down, but VERY interesting. As far as Hawaiian mythology I would get "Hawaiian Mythology" (imagine that) by Martha Beckwith. For the actual history, the best thing to do would be to go by the rulers. The books I've seen usually deal with one particular monarch or period in the Hawaiian history.
