Riptide

July 1959, off Norfolk Va.HMS Victorious refuels from RFA Tidereach, during exercise 'Riptide' This was to demonstrate to the US Navy the new 984 3 dimensional radar (the large dustbin on top of the bridge) which was fitted in the ship.
Victorious was a contempory of USS Hornet, featured in Frank Walsh's painting 'The Giant has Awakened'. The 4th ship of the name ,she was launched in 1939, Her Battle honours are
Norway 1941-44
'Bismark' 1941 may23rd-27th
Arctic 1941-42
Biscay 1942
North aFRICA 1942
Malta Convoys 1942
Sabang 1944 July 25th
Palembang 1945 Jan 24th
Okinawa 1945 March 26th-May 25th
Japan 1945.
Victorious was modernised in the late 1950's and was finaly scraped in 1969
The Name lives on today in a nuclear Submarine in the Royal Navy

Thanks for the comments, I was a member of the Flight Deck crew at this time, and after the exercise we went on to visit Boston and New York, my only time in America
I served in Victorious twice, and have a multitude of happy memories.
