Question International shipments

A number of questions to all scratchboarders outside of the USA: How do you handle shipping into the States and back, e.g. for the ISSA exhibition? I tried to get information on the customs requirements, and it all sounds awfully complicated (wholly apart from being cost intensive). Do you have a transport insurance? Do you declare the pictures to be only temporarily imported, and what do you do if one should actually sell? Do you work with a US customs broker? And do you ship with UPS or similar or use a company that specialises on art transports?
I was hoping to try and enter some pictures to ISSA sooner or later, but as I have only found limited information on the internet it all is somewhat daunting...
