I took a portrait painting class about 15 years ago. I painted realistic portraits for many years after that. Recently my niece was asking me to critique her portrait painting and all of a sudden I remembered something my teacher had said. It was something about the color you use when you are painting a curved edge such as the side of the nose that is going into shadow. I keep thinking it is something like “turning _____.” Could you possibly know what I am talking about?

Just before a form in the light meets the shadow, it is at its warmest and most chromatic. There may be rare exceptions. It would be easier to point out on a photo if you have one.
Something else that should be pointed out is that warm and cool can often be confusing terms. Value is much more important. Instead of asking if something is warm or cool, ask if it is redder, bluer, or yellower than the color it is next to. The answer to that question will take care of whether it is warmer or cooler.
